Junctioning I was fairly good at but didn't really have much fun with it, and I can't even remember what the system was in IX how bad is that! I've played it twice as well! But I do remember liking having exclusive abilities/classes for each character- actually I really liked that in VI - having exclusive abilities for each character (and there was so many), but also being similar to FFVII's system.
I really didn't like X's spheregrid, it annoyed me and I just didn't enjoy it, I think I found it a bit of a chore to keep adding the spheres. And I miss being able to customise characters before battles etc. I have heard X-2 has a very good system but I have never played it though I own it - mainly because I didn't enjoy X that much and was put off by the teenie "girl power" theme (nothing against girl power being a woman myself - but you know, just not in the pop star Spice Girl sense XD) but I am interested in the class swapping system it uses.

The materia system is very clever indeed. I to love how the game allowed you to prepare before certain bosses like Rufus and what not. Leveling up my characters is my favorite part in Final Fantasy games. I trained in the Mideel region, against these grasshoppers looking monsters. That's the only flaw with Final Fantasy. I have a very nasty habit of over training thus making the the ending part of the game a tad bit easy. In fact, I think when you fight the Turks for the final time, they gave me good match. I found them more entertaining then Sephirtoh.
Yeah, junctioning required the most time, and patience to get just right. ;)
So you didn't like the sphere grid, bummer. It's ok though, we all have our things. My only issue for FFX is that you can over train like mad! I beat the WEAPONS in that game with one overdrive from Tidus. :S Sin was a sad boss for me. Still, I loved the game so much, the music, and the characters, almost everything. :)

Lol the Weapons in FFX were probably the only part of the game I was diappointed with...I don't remember which one it was whichever gives 99 pendulums if you bribe it, but I used on Aeon overdrive, figuring I'd weaken it enough to bribe...and that was all it took.
I didn't really level my Yuna's strength very much, but I brought her down Lulu's path and part of Rikku's, so Yuna could take out just about any enemy in the game with a cast of Holy...she was easily my most powerful character even though I barely touched her strength stats :) I have a friend who levelled his Rikku so much she was stronger than Auron...his Rikku was amazing :)

I very rarely used Lulu...I use her for flans and elementals usually my first run through, but usually by the time I have the airship (and honestly usually before that, I just try not to neglect her too much :p) my physical attackers can take out magic-based enemies just as easily as non-magic based, so I'll only swing her in once every few battles to maybe use 'evade' or whatever just so she doesn't fall compeltely behind...Kimahri I also didn't use that much, since unfortunately he doesn't really have a speciality unless you start building one for him later on...Tidus, Auron, and Yuna are my three though...I can take on anything with that team!
And yeah...the monsters in the training arena are EXTREMELY difficult...however there is very little incentive to fight them unless you just want a chance to use your characters to their full potential. They give minimal AP, though they do have a rare drop of Dark Matter, though you can get 99 of those by capturing at least 5 of every fiend in the game, and honestly I think if you are using Dark Matter for weapon customization you're better off working towards the captured fiends that the monster arena...that's more just to make your characters feel good about themselves, I think :)

Yeah, taking Yuna through Lulu's path is a must, indeed. Ironically, I never really used Lulu all that much except for the final battle. Everybody else was 100 and really strong. Wow, that Rikku does sound incredible. I'd say my Tidus is my backbone for my team. His overdrive filled up so fast. In a sense, the ultimate weapons made thing a bit too easy in that game. I mean, the power is great and all, but there is hardly anything to use it on. Actually, I think a few monsters in the training arena are pretty decent. I've never tried them, but I heard they are ok.

Yeah - I just didn't get on with FFX at all - I didn't like the game much at all - but I do feel at bit compeled to try it again - I'm not sure why I didn't like it - I am quite a retro gamer - I prefer all my PS1 games to my PS2 games - and am still very much attached to my Snes. Maybe as well I waited so long for a PS2 FF and it didn't live up to the hype for me? And I didn't feel very attached to the characters they seemed to teenagy for me (God - I think I'm getting old - Nooooo! You know you're getting on when you are older than the characters in FF - when that happens for 7 - and will quite soon - I just don't want to think about it) - and liking a good Villian I didn't feel Seymore was "evil" enough for me. I like a dark "gritty" game. I'm probably just stuck in my ways and can't see anything as being better than FF7.
