Hi I've just joined here from an invitation from Miguel (Hi!-thanks!). Wow I've read through some of the posts here and some of the ideas/theories you have come up with I would never have thought of - especially the Rinoa/Ultimecia theory, its quite deep and I would not have thought of it before.
FF7 is my favourite FF, maybe because it was the FF ( Read more... )

Rufus soon made his presence known when he had Reno bring him Cloud, who was shocked that Rufus was still alive. Rufus became one of many to have contracted the fatal illness known as "Geostigma." He attempts to recruit Cloud to act as a bodyguard in protecting him from Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz. Rufus claims that he has reformed and is seeking the restoration of the world since it was his company that so greatly contributed to its decay. However, as revealed by Reno of the Turks, this plan also involves the reconstruction of the Shin-Ra Company, which was left leaderless after Final Fantasy VII. Cloud, already hesitant to help Rufus, rejects him outright after Reno's revelation.

Rufus spends most of the film confined to a wheelchair due to the energy draining effects of Geostigma. It should be noted that Rufus has recovered from Diamond Weapon's attack. He is also cloaked with a white sheet, ostensibly to hide the effects of his condition from others. In truth, however, the sheet was being used to conceal a box containing Jenova's remains, which Kadaj and his companions were seeking. Despite appearances, Rufus later proves to be far more resilient than he was letting on. It's important to note that Rufus is able to walk, and that the wheelchair was only part of his performance. It's main purposes was to keep Jenova hidden close by so Rufus can use it to his advantage, yet to insure Kadaj could not get it. Despite the wheelchair’s role as a ruse, it was still quite convenient since it also supported Rufus when geostigma rendered him fatigue. This is known because Kazushige Nojima (Scenario Writer for Advent Children) in a interview states that "Rufus can move as much as Denzel can." In a defiant speech addressed to Kadaj - reveals that Rufus is sincere in his reformation, having learned of the Lifestream and acknowledged its authority over the Planet. After a brief showdown with Kadaj, a fatigued Rufus is seen back in his wheelchair near the end of the film, but cured of Geostigma moments after, along with many of its other victims - by Great Gospel, cleansing rain sent by the spirit of Aerith Gainsborough.

I'll answer your question next. ;)

As for why Rufus wanted Cloud to think he was injured, I can think of a few reasons.

1. I suppose if Rufus approached Cloud in his true state, that is no wheelchair, no sheet, then Cloud would have probably left before the meeting even started. So, I suppose Rufus pretended to be injured and feeble to make the meeting smoother. Some what of an icebreaker. In a sense, pity could have caused Cloud to listen what Rufus had to say.

2. Despite the fact that Cloud is stronger then Rufus in battle from the Jenova cells, he's still quite dangerous. So I guess Rufus wanted to appear as no longer a threat, to ease Cloud's worrying.

I know you didn't say this, but I'm just going to do a quick conclusion. I don't think Rufus sat in a wheelchair and covered himself with a sheet just for Cloud. What I noticed about Rufus is that he likes to toy with people, and considers these kinds of things a game, even though he wants positive results in the end. Can you recall when you battled him in the game, and he laughed through out the whole battle? He even replied "Heh, that's all for today" after he lost to Cloud. So that shows me that he didn't take the ifght as serious as Cloud. Anyway, the whole wheelchair thing was a mere ruse. I'm sure he was using it for his lack of energy before Kadaj even was created. But he needed a clever way to hide Jenova.

So I guess he figured being covered in a sheet, WHILE sitting in a wheelchair would put Rufus in a position that he won't be forced to stand up or anything. His plan would have failed if he just walked around with the sheet, lol. I think he pretty much recovered from the ordeal in FF7. How could he still be injured AND have geostigma, yet dodge that blast so easily? There is no that's possible. He's recovered; it's just the geostigma that eats away at his energy. Besides, Cloud and Denzel have separate ways of dealing with their geostigma. Cloud just lives on the outskirts of Midgar and just collapse on the ground, Denzel uses his bed, and Rufus uses the wheelchair for his tiredness.

My internet connection at home decided to stop working so I had to wait until I got to work to reply. :-)

Wikipedia is written by fans so what is written on the site can't be taken for 100%. Anyone can create an account and edit the inforamation that's there so what's written there is a compilation of interpretations made by fans of the series for others to read.

At least most of it though is agreed upon by the grand majority of fans though! :-)
