Advent Children ~ Rufus Shinra Debate

Apr 18, 2006 15:52

Well this debate topic involves Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children. I decided to do a little research on the movie, and post two of the most frequently asked questions (FAQ) which were related to the movie. These questions revolve around the wheelchair man, and I am 100% sure all know it is by now, but just in case of spoilers, I decided to post the actually entry in the below lj-cut. So I hope the below questions make you think, just like all of the past entries we all have posted here. Enjoy! :)

FAQ 1: “How did Rufus Shinra survive the Diamond Weapon attack?”

So I am sure you have all asked yourself this question, heard it from others and might be a little bit tired of it. I just decided to post my views on the issue. To be honest, I thought Rufus Shinra was indeed killed when I first witnessed the destruction of his office. I mean the flames totally engulfed him! Yet here he is, without a burn on his body, and looks better the ever. So am I the only one here who felt as though he was a goner, or did part of you think that he could have survived? Many fans are wondering if due to the poor ending of Final Fantasy 7, they manipulated the events of the actual game (changing the fact that Rufus Shinra was indeed dead) just to make the movie. This could be quite possible. I mean look how long it took for them to actually bring out the movie, after the game was first released. It’s quite a few years apart.

Rufus: "That day, I..."

Cloud: "Why did you call for me?"

Rufus: "Just before the..."

Cloud: "Who were those people who attacked me?"

Rufus: "Listen..."

Cloud: "Don't wanna hear it!"

Regardless, I still believe it is quite possible for Rufus Shinra to have survived. The most obvious point is simply because Rufus Shinra is one of Final Fantasy 7’s fighters; I mean you fought him before, did you not? So that would increase his chance of survival vs a weakling. Throughout the entire game, Rufus is displayed as some God, who has no emotions, and fears nothing. It is pretty safe to say that the building halved the impact of the blasts. In my eyes, I can see the office being blown up, as he shielded himself. Then the flames engulfed a portion of the room, and the force threw him to the back of the office, so fast that the flames didn’t even get a chance to burn him to a cinder. Very injured, and weak, Rufus found the energy to crawl down the long flight of steps out of his office, as the ceiling began to buckle in. Noticing that the elevators were not safe to use, he probably rolled down to the 68 or 67th floor were he finally fainted, and was found by rescue workers. That’s how I see the whole incident hope you liked my translation, lol.

FAQ 2: “Why is Rufus in a wheelchair?”

Ok, when I first read this question, I just shook my head, in pity. I was thinking to myself, well wouldn’t you be in a wheelchair if you went through what Rufus did? But, my opinion changed when I saw the movie. I was now aware that Rufus was infected by Geostigma aka Star Scar Syndrome, along with that boy Denzel. If you recall, Denzel had a very hard time getting out of bed, because apparently extreme fatigue is one of the most obvious signs of Geostigma. This would explain why Rufus relies on the wheelchair, because Geostigma has taken away lots of his energy, I believe he recovered from the Diamond Weapon assault. As for for how he became infected in the first place, I would say the Lifestream traveled through the broken windows of his office, and flowed throughout the entire building, and that is how Rufus became in contact with the Lifestream which held Jenova cells, which resulted in his infection. About the reason I believe he can walk, I strongly support this becasue towards the end of the movie, he stands up from his wheelchair, without a burn on him, and he quickly dodges Kadaj’s blast, which indicate that Rufus has a bit of leg strength. Although I am mainly convinced that Rufus was pretending to be 100% defensless, towards the end he proved to have still be skilled with his shotgun. Why was he in the wheelchair in the ending? Well he wasn’t cured at the moment, and he probably used up all his energy in the brief battle, and he was tired as hell. But I’m sure after he was cured, he was able to walk again and what not after some rest.

I know it was a bit long, but that’s my views on everything. I hope you liked it. :)
