Edward Elric both loved and loathed the snow. It was fun to play in and he could remember many a good snowball fight with Winry and his little brother, but at the same time the cold temperatures and his automail really didn’t mix as the sheer chill in the air was enough to make his nerves sting and ache more than usual. He had just called off work for the evening when he had heard the screams so naturally instead of running away like a reasonable person, he had quickened his pace, managing to find the small suburban street easily enough.

Assessing the situation in just under a split second, he made the reckless decision to charge right into the fray, getting between Sakura and the demon as it lunged forward to sink its teeth into her soft flesh, getting a mouthful of metal instead, much to it’s disgust. “You bastard!” Ed snarled as he grit his teeth, gripping his arm with his other hand to help support it; the demon was heavier than it looked. “Pick on somebody your own siz-... pick on somebody who can fight back asshole!” Forcing the demon off him, he quickly inspected the damage before he took a fighting stance, still positioned in front of Sakura.

He paled considerably when a second demon stalked out of the dark alley nearby, wondering what on earth had possessed him to act so irrationally. “...oh shit.” He whimpered, his courage leaving him as he found himself facing down the pair of gigantic beasts.

Sakura flinched and winced as she covered her head with her hands, until she heard the distinct sound of someone charging in front of her and shouting out in disgust at the demon. She looked up then at her savior, blinking and slowly relieving her head from her arms.

She hastily stood upright, and before she could say anything, gasped at the sight of the second demon. "C-Can you fight?" she asked hurriedly, placing a trembling hand on his shoulder. "I-I don't have anything to fight b-back with... but if you don't... we should run...!"

He certainly wanted to run, he had bitten off far more than he could chew and was regretting helping the girl in the first place. His own life was on the line now, he couldn’t afford to fool around or make any mistakes. One of the demons cocked its head back and roared loudly before swiping at the shorter blond’s face, he raised his arm to shield his eyes from the deadly claws before he kicked out at the creature to fend it off. The only weapons he had were whatever he could design out of the materials around him and of course, his own automail. “Not exactly...,” he replied hesitantly before ducking out of the way as the second demon went for him. Clapping his hands he transmuted his automail into its trademark blade before raising it to defend himself. “What are you hanging around for?! Get the hell out of here!”

"But I can-t-!" Sakura said insistently. "I can't j-just leave you to them! They came a-after me!" she said urgently, her eyes widening with surprise at the suggestion. If there was one thing Sakura would never do, would be to leave someone to fight an enemy for her, a person that she might never see again, and who might get hurt because of her.

Shielding his face yet again as one of the creatures lunged at him, Ed swore loudly before grasping one of the fleshy limbs with his normal hand, kicking the beat in the stomach before he twisted his body so he could impale the demon through the shoulder with his automail. It wasn’t a fatal injury, but it would be enough to slow the demon down... and shower him with blood.

“Ugh... dammit all,” he muttered as he yanked his arm back, doing his best to ignore the disgusting warm liquid that now stained his clothes and caked his arm. His hair was beginning to come loose from the braid and his breathing had become more laboured as the fight progressed. He ended up reeling backwards when the second demon moved in to aid it’s fallen comrade and he quickly clapped his hands before crouching and touching the ground, causing the flagstones to shift into a large wall that the creature rebounded from.

This was getting him nowhere, he was already exhausted and those things just kept coming so making another split second decision, he reinforced the wall before grasping Sakura’s wrist, yanking her into a nearby alley. “C’mon!”

As blood showered over Ed, she half held back a shriek and covered her face, but only recieved a couple of splatters on her exposed arm. Fortunately she wasn't fearful of blood, so it didn't bother her much - she was more surprised when the flagstones moved to block the onslaught of the two demons, so much that she didn't notice Ed had grasped her wrist until she almost near fell over, and all she could do then was stumble and follow after him with haste.

She looked all the more worried as she ran along after him. "I'm sorry I got you into this!" she apologized as they came to a halt in the alley - hopefully out of the demons line of vision. "I should really arm myself..." she said regretably - even if it would be weird to have her gun with her a lot of the time, it would mean she wouldn't be caught off guard like this. The city had been so quiet as of late she'd near forgotten it could be a dangerous place.

Ed fixed her with a Look. “Y’think?” He remarked bluntly before shaking his head. Now wasn’t the time for pointing out how unbelievably reckless it was to wander around the city during a mild snowstorm in some quiet backstreet without having some means of defending yourself. “C’mon, I think we’ve lost them.” He added as he gestured for her to follow. He was beginning to think he’d pulled a muscle, his shoulder was quite tender.

Sakura flinched under the look she recieved, and nodded as he followed after him, fidgiting with her fingers, looking up briefly at his shoulder again. "Does it hurt?" she asked quietly, before deciding to rephrase, "I-I mean, if you need it fixing up a little, like with first a-aid, that's something I can do..." her voice faded out into nothing. She was quite good at it - afterall, she'd somehow managed to align the bones of a broken leg together and wrap bandages around it to keep it stable - but she felt she was pushing herself onto him too much.

Slowly flexing his fingers to ensure that his arm was fine he grimaced a little before shoving his hand into his coat pocket. He seemed to have calmed down now that the immediate danger had passed and his features softened as he glanced back at the girl. “Yeah it hurts but it’ll be fine. I probably just pulled something, there’s no blood,” he offered, holding his shoulder tenderly. “Are you alright?” He wondered just how many people had walked on by without even batting an eyelid at the girl who was clearly in distress.

Sakura didn't seem too sure at his answer, still frowning, slightly apologetic and slightly from worrying. But she didn't press it, if he said he was okay, then she'd take it with good grace. "Me? I'm fine..." she said slowly. "It just suddenly came out of nowhere and surprised me, but... I'm used to it, a little, so... I'm alright."

Ed regarded her skeptically. Used to it? What kind of crap is this girl involved with? He asked himself before shaking his head dismissively. Thinking never really got anyone anywhere in situations like these. It was always better to go by instinct and leave the thinking till later when you realized just how close to death you were. "What the hell was that thing anyway?" He demanded.

"I'm... I'm not one hundred percent sure, but..." Sakura slowed as she thought, recalling the name of the creatures that had attacked her before, not just in this world, but in others, too. "... t-those are demons."

Edward blinked. “Demons...?” Had he heard that right? He wasn’t convinced. Demons were the kinds of creatures that the religious nutcases babbled about when they were trying to frighten young children into picking up the bible rather than an alchemy book, to think that it was based on some kind of truth was mind boggling. “...are you sure?”

Sakura nodded, even though she wished she didn't have to. Part of her wanted to believe they weren't real, but she knew it was the truth. "Yes. Demons... demons do exist. Here... they come from time to time," she said quietly.
