Having been woken up by the loud thud on the roof of her apartment, Maya sleepily switched on a lamp beside her bed, curiously waiting for another such sound to follow. When one didn't, she relaxed slightly, figuring it might just be a cat or a bird. Nothing to worry about.

Then she noticed something from the corner of her eye - something that made her freeze - an eerie masked figure, on her balcony. She scrambled out of bed, still in her nightdress, turned her lamp off again and vanished into the kitchen, re-emerging with what looked like a wooden pole - hastily pulled off a mop, but it would serve its purpose. She silently eased open the sliding glass door leading onto the balcony, hoping she had gone unnoticed, and held the pole protectively in front of her and doing her best to look threatening (as much as her short stature and pink clothes would allow).

"Hey, mister!" she said, sounding decidedly more brave than she felt. "I'm gonna give you ten seconds to get the heck off my balcony before I call the police!"

Hei merely looked at Maya with little or no response - normally he would have just done as she'd said, up and leave, wanting as little attention as possible - but her loud voice probably had already alerted the one he was trailing, and the less civilians it killed, would be the best outcome for everyone.

Great, he thought, bemused. Now a civilian was involved, and he would have to protect her at all costs.

Tutting slightly, he looked back up - and soon enough, down came the contractor. "Get down!" he called to Maya, dodging the pole with adept ability and pushing her head straight to the ground, covering her from the blast that issued in mid air, seconds before where their heads had been.

"Wha--?" Maya said alarmedly, not entirely sure what had just happened. Making a reach for her pole that had slipped from her grasp, she warily chanced a glance up and where the blast had just dissapated. "What's going on?!" Whatever it was, Hei seemed to have expected it... so did that mean someone was after him? It seemed that way.

"This is no time for talking," was Hei's response, calm and collected as usual. "Just get inside and stay quiet," he commanded, though part of him knew this was going to have little effect. The average human cared not for danger at all, even when it was staring them straight in the face.

"But!" Maya protested automatically, a little disconcerted by how calmly he was taking the situation. Then she remembered that whatever was attacking them was most likely still around, and might hear them. Despite the fact their position was already given away, she lowered her voice to a whisper. "What about you? If you stay out here, you'll get hurt."

"I won't get hurt," Hei replied. There was no emotion in his voice as he said it - no boasting, no doubts, just... nothing. The slight compassion he still had hold of wanted her to go away - the longer she spent with him, the more likely he'd have to either kill her or do something to her. Which, he didn't want to, but if worst came to worst... but if she kept herself to herself...

"Fine," he said eventually. "But if you want to stay here, you have to keep quiet."

"Yeah, yeah, I'm not stupid enough to get myself killed," Maya said, lowering her voice even further at that til it was barely audible. If he wasn't going to get hurt... well, she would have to take his word for it. And if he did, she could always call for help.

"Be careful," she said quietly, surprising even herself with the concern in her voice. Perhaps it was because he protected her, but either way, she'd rather not see anyone get hurt if she could help it.

Despite being as emotionless as the next contractor, Hei noticed the concern in her voice, but showed no ther reaction to it than placing a stern hand on her shoulder, then bringing himself to his feet, slowly making his way in the shadows to the edge of the balcony, for a few seconds sticking his head out to look upright - he wasn't there. He looked down... ah, there he was, facing the other way. Obviously, he had no idea where Hei was.

"I'm going down," he said slowly to Maya. More so, so she knew he wasn't about to kill himself by jumping off the balcony.

Maya nodded in uncharacteristic silence, rooted to the spot and unintentionially wringing her hands from nervousness. Reluctantly, she offered, "...Good luck. And thanks for protecting me just now."

"I'm not protecting you," Hei replied promptly, climbing up onto the ledge of the balcony. "Just ridding the world of another liar and traitor."

With that, he lept downward, landing poised on the floor gingerly, but not silent enough for his quarry not to notice he was on his trail. Turning, the other contractor ran towards him, causing another explosion in mid-air, and Hei to reluctantly pull out his knife and hurl it in the other's general direction, all the while occasionally glancing back up at the balcony to see if Maya was unharmed.

(ooc: feel free to say hei knocks him down on yours, if you want :D)

Although the knife hit its mark, Maya gestured wildly for Hei to turn back around and focus on his task when he looked back at her. She didn't want him to drop concentration, especially just for her sake. "Just pay attention, I'll be fine if you do!" She was still extremely frightened, but more than anything she looked worried for Hei.

Ducking from another explosion, Hei retrieved his knife, latching it onto the side of another balcony then running across the side of the building to behind the contractor. This however, just seemed to annoy the other more than anything else, causing him to send several explosions in Hei's direction. Dodging them all, he came up at his back, grasping his throat in his fist, the other hand holding the knife to his throat.

"You won't talk, will you?" he questioned, before looking up at Maya, who was still watching. "If you don't like death, I suggest you look away."

Maya violently shook her head in silence, dropping to the floor so the balcony wall would be between her and the gruesome scene to come. She didn't know what to make of it all, whether Hei was the good guy or the bad guy in all of this, but - murder was murder. He was going to kill that person, and although it was justified self-defense... it was still sickening.

Suppressing a shiver, she pressed her hands to her ears to block out any final cries of agony. This reminds me of - of when sis was killed... she thought grimly to herself, dragging her knees up to her chest and not daring to move to see if it was over yet.

Maya was even lucky Hei had even given her some thought. If the other contractor had gotten to Hei first, there would be no such concideration. The contractor Hei had hold of was struggling, but it just caused Hei to tighten his grip more. "I hate contractors," he spat, shaking his head, scowling behind the mask. "Liars, murderers. I hate them," he cursed, bringing the dagger right up to the other contractors neck.

Before pushing it straight into his neck, his eyes glowing red in the slits of the mask, the other not having time to scream as he fell to the floor. Dead, a small pool of blood appearing next to his neck.

Hei stared blankly at the knife for a few seconds, before standing upright and glancing back up at the balcony. She'd gone. Maybe he could just slip off...

Experimentally, Maya removed her hands from her ears. Silence, save the engine of a car humming in the distance. Catiously she twisted around and kneeled to peer down at Hei, the dark and limp shape beside him presumably the corpse. As a defense attorney's aide, who frequently dealt with murder cases, the corpse didn't bother her - just the killing.

I guess he did it, she concluded. But do I call the police? A little late now, since he'll see me still up here...

Even with Maya's resolves on calling the police, the likelihood was they would be here following 'BK201' any minute - he had used his powers, and that astrology department was accurate when he moved. Noticing Maya, he stood in silence looking up at her, not caring to move the body at all, before walking straight to the wall, looking up at her. "It had to be done," he said blandly, more so to get rid of the face he was recieving from her.
