Nuriko's Name/Birthday Theory
Like I pointed out in my previous entry, we can't determine all the information about Nuriko's zodiac because his year of birth is unknown. But, we can still work with what we have. :)
We don't need his year to find out what his inner animal would be. Since his birthday falls between March 5 - April 4, we can already determine that it is the Rabbit.
The rabbit's earthly branch symbol is 卯. Does that look a bit familiar, Nuriko fans?
That's because 柳 is deriven from that character.
柳 is a phono-semantic compound of 木 and 卯.
木 means "tree" or "wood". 柳 means "willow [tree]"
Next, we can look at the on'yomi and break it down. On'yomi is "the Japanese reading (yomi) of a kanji character based on the original Chinese pronunciation". So what is the on'yomi for 柳?
..."Ryuu" (or "ryū"). Hence Nuriko's real name, "Ryuuen". The pronunciation came from the original character itself, which when romanized, is "Liǔ"...Nuriko's first name in Chinese.
Birthdate Theory:
I decided to do this based on the Shukuyou website found by appaku (see this entry). Since she says it is the most accurate she's found, I thought it would be worth a try!
A few days ago, before reading into the Chinese Zodiac, I was wondering how Nuriko's birthday related to his constellation (hydra) and the Southern Vermillion Bird (Suzaku). This was actually the reason I began looking up my birthday - I figured "hey, we're only a day apart, I should be able to figure this out!". WRONG! lol. But anyway, I thought I would use the site to type in his known date of "March 10", and combine it with one of the 1970s years. I specifically chose the 70s because I figured Ms. Watase might have based their birth years from the date of the original serialization (1992). So I subtracted by 18 (Nuriko's age), and I got to the year 1974. However, looking up 1974, it wasn't a match. I went earlier..wasn't a match. Went later..and I found a match. 1976. 柳宿.

Year Animal: Fire Dragon (represents the outer personality of a person)
Month Animal: Metal Rabbit (represents the inner personality of a person)
Fire is "associated with the South, the color red, hot weather, daylight, and the Vermilion Bird...Suzaku".
[Outer personality]: Dragons can be stately, vigorous, strong, self-assured, proud, direct, eccentric, fiery, passionate, generous, loyal.
[Inner self]: Rabbits can be gracious, kind, sensitive, amiable, elegant, a good friend, reserved, tender, self-assured, astute, compassionate. Can also be moody, opportunistic, and stubborn.

I tried entering a few of the other's birthdates but it didn't really work. Soo this has its faults of course. Still, it was fun! If anyone does happen to know Nuriko's true birthdate (or more knowledge in general), pleeease let me know! I'm very curious about it. :)
