I've been in Woodbridge, VA, since Monday, on a sudden (unexpected (unwanted!)) business trip. It's one of those "we've got a big problem, so let's throw people at it" situations. Whatever. Maybe I'll at least get a gold star on my forehead, just in time for annual evals. However, this has caused me to miss:
* Wallyball semi-finals (and the Ballbarians lost... *sob*)
* Magic pre-release weekend
* Being able to watch The Amazing Race finale with Dewey tonite.
* Missing Julie in general.
* And, now I'll have even more of a post-Hawaii, post-biz-trip work backlog. : P
I drove down to Norfolk and Virginia Beach on Saturday to check out my old stomping grounds. It felt weird, kinda like returning to the scene of the crime. No luck in tracking down a couple old shipmate pals. And the weather was awful -- cold, cloudy, and rainy/sleeting all day. With the grey washout, and the general lack of people out and about, it really resembled an old, frozen snapshot of my past. I kept expecting bouncing balls with sharp teeth to appear and devour it, so it could drop into oblivion (big bonus points if that makes any sense to you at all...)
I did go see
Cloverfield yesterday, which was pretty cool...
you've probably already heard that it's like The Blair Witch Project crossed with Godzilla, which is true (but in a good way). It also seemed to crib from other movies... the monster reminded me of a CG-updated Kraken from Clash of the Titans, and its "offspring" looked suspiciously like the bugs from Starship Troopers. Also, the plot seemed to borrow elements from (the, admittedly, obscure)
Miracle Mile: seemingly nice, normal beginning taking an abrupt left turn into a world of $#!*... racing the dropping of a bomb to find your true love... even the helicopter crash at the bitter end. Overall, very good flick, tho... J.J. Abrams is still the man.
Be back Friday!
