tainted

Set at Taint last night. As I expected, the audience was less than desirable as a whole. Small crowd, which can be fine, except that they also were quiet and passive and acted bored. My sources overheard complaints that they'd seen these numbers before. Which I can completely understand, but do bands have new songs every show they play? I guess you can't control people's expectations.

Maybe in the future we always throw in at least one brand new number, even at dance night events where we're just a fleeting bit of entertainment.

And I guess the numbers went well, but it's hard as a perfectionist to get up there knowing that as a whole this show isn't as tight as we want it. And I can't get over the difficulty of performing for blank stares.

I think the lesson is: stick to what we do best: slick, highly-produced shows, infrequent as they may be. The only time I think we should do these remote shows is when it's going to raise our exposure. Last night did that a little bit, but for the most part I felt like I'd seen most of the audience members at previous shows. The audience was either there to see us, or happened to be the same crowd that frequents our shows.

I think the only times we should be performing at outside events is when we know that a majority of the crowd will never have seen us before. Only then will their expectations not be too high. And we have only ourselves to blame for setting the bar so high for ourselves, but our format simply doesn't work as well in the format we tried last night.

It's a learning experience.
