So tonight in fire school we went through fire fighter survival. During the class they showed 2 videos of fire fighters getting themselves into situations that could have easily been avoided if they just stuck to their training and thought things through.
One of the scenes in the video was a guy standing on top of a 2 story drum looking in this canister filled with explosive fumes for someone that fell in. The crew on the ground decided to cut open the bottom to allow the crews to go in and get the guy. As they used the saw the drum exploded and the camera zoomed out. All that you saw was a single boot slowly fall to the ground and hit the fire truck.
This type of scene was shown over and over again. Because of it 2 Proby fire fighters started to question if this is the type of job they want to be in. Seeing people being so out of it because of a video to some degree I found strange. I don’t know if it is because of all my EMT background that it did not bother me watching the video. Just the class thought it was strange when I did not make a sound or shy away when they were showing another fire fighter with total body burns that where 2nd and 3rd degree.
This then made me question. Am I strange for not being freaked out by this? Should I have been freaked out? The only logical explanation that I could come to is that most EMTs become this way after a while. If you lasted past the first one then the second, third and so on does not seem as bad. Hell seeing a beheaded body that first year as an EMT I think might have done it but who knows.
Well tomorrow we Scot up for the first time and breathe on tank air. It shall be interesting at least. Talk to you all later. Oh, before I forget $1302.76... The person that pertains to will understand what that means. =) *hugs*
