I'd like to begin this post by saying that this post was brought to you in part by paul mooney, and dennis Miller. Which means there will be profanity.
I believe in personal responsiblity. I believe in the idea that if you do something wrong you admit to it, and keep going. It's one of many things that's missing in the country today. And to begin i wanted to pick to stories that exemplify the lack of responsility right now.
http://www.dothaneagle.com/gulfcoasteast/dea/local_news.apx.-content-articles-DEA-2007-11-26-0003.html This story is actually quite sad on a lot of levels. Basically a little gril is going to have a sleepover at a friends house. I'd like to say at the outset that it's not exactly "next door" It's like a maybe a mile or more away. And she's nine. She walks overt to the neighbor's house only to find that their not home, and the attakc happens. The dogs were put to sleep a few days later, and no chargers have been filed.
My first question when heard about this story, as it's less than 5 miles away from my house, was where were her parents, and why aren't these tow fuckin idiots charged with something!? Who in their right mind lets a nine year old girl walk anywhere alone near dark?! Anything could have happened to her, she could have been kidnapped and assaulted, she could have been killed for chrissake! But no , we'll just put the dogs to sleep because they were bad, and woe is me to the parents. Dont get me wrong I feel bad that she got hurt, but these two morons could have picked up a phone, or driven their daughter to the fucking house! No the smart thing for them to do was to let her walk alone ner dark, near a major highway. And sure if the attack by the dogs didn't happen, she still had to walk back alone, at that point in the dark. It was an hour before she was found bleeding in the yard, in the dark. It just makes my blood boil because they have to quote Paul Mooney "The complexion for the Protection" If that had been a black family in the same situtation, all sorts of questions would have been asked. However, it's much less about race, and much more about personal responsiblity, but I'm going to tie the two things together, a little further down.
http://abcnews.go.com/WN/story?id=3921895 This story also goes to personal responslibilty, and to the idea that the goverment that governs least governs best.
SO the massachussetts legislature wants to ban spanking in people's homes. Just how far do we really want the Nanny state to go? We turn so much of parenting over to schools, who once you get the students there have no fear of anything. Why? Because their parents are instilling any fear in them, nor any idea that actions have consequences. Dont get me wrong, I've been beaten at points by my parents, where I bled for three days, and those types of beatings, where you just go too far, I'm in no way an advocate of. I am an advocate of, a beating(colloqulism) that lets a child know not to do disobey, that there is some sort of authority greather than themselfves. Not that in some schools that any authority is exercised. They keep wanting to make kids feel special, that they're all winners . . . except the real world isn't like that, hell highschool isn't like that! In like you learn that you're special to those that care about you, that you're special to your family, but to society your just as unique as everyone else. NOw we have a generation of weak willed nhilists, who do understand careing, or why violence towards women is wrong, who value their 200 friends on my space rather than the neighbor across the street.
And it's because a lot of parents have abdicated the responsilblity of teaching their children and have handed it to the school system.
In this counrty their is enequity and polarization, on a host of issues, from the war in iraq to immigration. Even though we are the greatest country in the world were not perfect, and were never going to be because were human.
However when you look at just those two issues we spend so much time on both sides calling names, that we cant solve the problem. We spend so much time trying not to make the other person angry that we lose frank discourse.
When I teach history in schools I try to leave my students with this adage " The history that you are studying currently are the actual shows, everything you see on televsion are the reruns of those shows."
They call this war "Mr Bush's war", however the civil war, was "Mr Lincoln's war, Vietnam was "Mr Nixon's war" even tho LBJ started it, and on and on.
I believe that we have a responsiblity as citizens to help make our children informed citizens, with values, and problem solving skills. We have to understand that we live in the mirrior of the Roman Empire, complete with the bread an circuses of reality T.V. and video games. He have an unresponsive goverment who everyday is taking more and more power away from it's people, and who are in the end glad to take it. We have a goverment who is glad to take our money and give it to a foreign bank (the federal reserve) with out any actual law that says they can do it. Look it up. I've even asked former IRS agents, and they cant tell me where the income tax law is.
These are the ways that we are all screwed by the go'vt. Yes blacks are scrwed harder b/c on the whole we are less informed, more trusting of the gov't and generally disadvantaged .. . .. Bullshit. Sure it's hard to be black, but to me it's harder to be a native american, or Jewish. They just transported us, deprived us of certain tools to compete. They didn't take our land and pay not rent, or attempt to exterminate us.
And yet, anytime there's a supposed crisis, jesse jackson is in front of a camera. We should take the responsibilty to become better people in a effort to return this country to greatness. We shouldn't allow others to do what we could do ourselves.
Pick an issue, and the solution to it is to be informed, and to take responsiblity. NO mtter what.
