fermented applesauce

Soo...I looked in the fridge this morning and on the top shelf there was a small jar of applesauce. I thought "awesome, someone bought applesauce, I'm havin applesauce for breakfast." So I grabbed the jar and a spoon and sat down on the couch. I opened the jar and took a spoonful out and put it in my mouth. Then I thought "...wait....ummm...applesauce isn't supposed to be tangy...." So then I was thinking "did someone put alcohol in the applesauce?!?!"...but a second later I realized to my horror what was the more likely cause of the "tangy applesauce", and spit it back out. I looked on the jar for the expiration date only to find that it was smudged and I couldn't read it. So I then went to find my dad to ask him how long it had been in the fridge, and he didn't even know. He said "I just put in on the top shelf so it would get eaten". I thought "great dad, now I'm gonna die of food poisoning because you didn't smell the applesauce". That damn applesauce had been in the fridge for wayyyyy too long, and now I had to find something else for breakfast.
