Sitting on her bed, Hermione stared at the package in front of her. She knew what would be in it, the same thing as usual. Toothbrush, toothpastes, books, jeans, and a Gryffindor scarf set. Her parents bought her practically the same thing every year. Slowly she pulled the card off and read through it briefly. Happy Birthday, we're proud of you, we love you, blah blah blah The words ran through her mind quickly without really pausing to let them sink in. It was the same card she received every year and she tucked it into the drawer of her nightstand. Realizing she was being overly cynical and her parents didn't deserve that, Hermione tried to brush off her sour mood. He won't even remember it's my birthday soon, well why should he? It isn't like he meant any of the things he said or even that he cares about you in any way. Birthdays are completely ridiculous anyway. Shaking her head slightly she pulled the box toward herself. Opening it slowly she tried not to be crushed when the first thing that became immediately visible was "Great Wizards of Our Time and Theirs". Sighing she pulled the thick and heavy book out of the box and set it on the bed next to her. Reaching in for her new toothbrush her hands closed around a decidedly smaller box instead. It felt furry in her warm hand and pulling it out to where she could see it, she immediately recognized it as a jewelry box. Holding it in the palm of her hand she slowly opened the lid. A beautiful deep garnet on a gold chain blinked back at her and a small note fell out. Dear Mione, You're technically an adult now so I thought I'd give you something a little more adult this year. Well I gave you the toothbrush too because your dental hygiene is very important, but I thought you might like this better. Love, Dad P.S.-Don't tell your mother! Grinning uncontrollably she quickly undid the clasp and slid the necklace around her neck where it winked against her skin. Absolutely enthralled with the present she returned to the box with more enthusiasm, pulling our some other small gifts to unwrap.
