Thirty-sixth rebirth [Text]

As irksome as all of this is, I do hope everyone understands that it will all be over soon. Nothing ever lasts in Adstringendum- not the people, not the events. It's disconcerting to suddenly lose something you've taken for granted for so long, but if you simply allow yourself time to adjust, you'll find that you can train your other senses ( Read more... )

You've been a doctor perhaps? You seem to be very authoritative about all this.

Ah- a scientist of sorts actually. But my main focus was humans, so in a way, I could be considered a doctor.

Oh you do sound so familiar. Where did you study?

[Of course, he doesn't really know all of this through science, but through his own injuries throughout his many lives.]

Gargantua. It's not that far from Raimei.

...Though, of course, I haven't been there in over a year.

[Why this guy wanted to know is a bit beyond him. But, even if he was from his world and knew about the atrocities the scientists of Gargantua had done, Yuca didn't particularly care. He could always claim to be from a different time, after all.]

Oh? How did you learn to help people with blindness, loss of sensation, deafness and the like? I admit yours isn't one of the universities I attended, but the topic at hand doesn't seem to fit any standard curriculum either.

Most of it is just common sense, really. I've spent a long time trying to see things from other people's viewpoints.

You sound very compassionate. I'm Horst, by the way.

Oh- thank you.

[Oh, Horst, I really hope you don't mean that.]

My name is Yuca Collabell. It's a pleasure.

[Horst Cabal: desperately seeking the good in everyone since 19xx]

Indeed, the pleasure's all mine.

Say, you wouldn't happen to know any remedies for when someone becomes especially cantankerous?

[SHIVER. Be careful or the little bastard will wind up manipulating you to kingdom come.

Not like he's not already trying to sink his claws in.]

Well, I suppose it depends on the reason for such an attitude, wouldn't it? Being calm and patient though, comes to mind.

[There is a long line of scientists all out to manipulate poor Horst. Well all right, so far just Johannes and he's not really that active in any manipulations. But still!]

You would think so. He makes it his job to be a pain in the ass, I'm afraid, and he doesn't drink so I can't even subdue him that way. Plus, now he's blind and that just seems to make him more annoyed with life than usual.

Oh, well, no sense complaining! Did the Animus affect you, too?

Oh? He's here with you?

[It's still scary! Besides which, even though Yuca is technically a priest at this point, his scientist ways are almost never out of his system. If it benefits him in some way, he'll do it.]

Ah- yes. If they hadn't, I'd be talking to you through the video function. I'm currently mute, though it's more of an annoyance than a hazard.

I suspect he's the reason I'm here, actually.

[Horst is quite used to people using him for their own gain, when and if they get through his annoying habit of Trying To Do Right.]

That sounds...irritating. How do you suppose they chose which senses to take? Luck of the draw, or based on what they knew everyone would hate to lose most?

Interesting. I think that might have some merit- certain people seem to drag others here, myself included.

It's not the latter. I'd much prefer to be mute, rather than blind or deaf. I'm mostly a quiet person anyway. If anything, I'd say it's random, but it could be symbolic. I've misused my voice in the past, perhaps they're trying to give me a message.

Really? Who brought you in?

You may be onto something with that. I wonder how long before they start affecting me, too; suppose I ought to live it up while I can.

More of a case of me bringing someone in. There's someone who's been here twice now. My best friend.

[God, Yuca, is there anyone you HAVEN'T waxed to about Rain yet?]

Usually things like this happen about twice a month. Not everyone is affected, and it's usually varying degrees. You might be hit with it at the end of the month.
