Almost at the halfway point for Fire 2. I'll be glad when it's done. One step closer to promoting and being able to transfer to a full engine spot. We're doing extrication this week and next, which means lots of playing with the hydraulic tools. Better known as "The Jaws of Life" and assorted companions. I love cutting cars up.
I've also been thinking about a specialty. There's different rescue disciplines. Swift water, dive team, trench/collapse/confined space, and so forth. I'm not much for swimming or crawling into holes, but I've really been thinking about high angle. After this class, I might sign up for Rescue Tech and then Rope Rescue. Repelling off the side of a building appeals to me. I just can't tell my mother about it. She'd go crazy after watching the scene in Ladder 49 where the guy goes over the side of the high rise in a harness. That movie is her comparison for everything I do at this point.
I've been hanging out with Kelli, the new girl at the volly firehouse. She's 19, and a tad immature, but we can geek out together about fire and EMS stuff, and that's cool. She is also "normal", which means she has interests outside of the fire service, which is good. It's hard to find people up at the volly house that I can just hang out with under normal circumstances, meaning a non-fire environment. We went and saw Hostel 2 the other night. Gruesome movie, but not really "scary" as far as horror flicks go.
Tomorrow I said I'd work for a friend who had a family emergency, so off for an early night I go.
