Comix of the week- Double sized Supergirl edition!

Feb 20, 2010 00:15

Today in the comic shop I totally said "screw it" and bought the Cassandra Cain JSA Classified figure before anyone else could snatch it up (as Laura hinted it would- totally to manipulate me into buying it, but it worked). I don't buy action figures unless they are Cass or Steph. Or Oracle!Babs. Basically, Batgirls are my weakness. Anyway, I figured since I'm definitely getting the Steph figure when it comes out, I should get this so I can stand them up together as too awesome Batgirls and make them cuddle.

It'sa great figure- really clean and a perfect rendering off her costume. She's also got a badass glare going. My only problem with the figure is she's a tad too buxom, Cass should be small and lithe and flatchested IMO, like the tiny ninja she is. Otherwise, it's perfect. Here's a pic of the figure so you now what the hell I'm talking about: images2.wikia.nocookie.net/casscain/images/e/ed/JLA_Classified_toys_2.jpg

It looks better in real life actually. On closer inspection, she does have thigh high boots for some weird reason, but you can barely tell. Anway, can't wait to pose her with my Steph figure. Together, they fight crime!

Supergirl #50

This is good! Except for the parts with Gangbuster which seemed unneccesary, because do I care about Gangbuster, whoever he is (well, the exposition told us who he was but DO I CARE about the exposition?

Anyway, Kara was AWESOME in this issue. Which is good. because it's her special issue and all.She was unapologetically kickass and everything Supergirl should be.

"Ready to get the crap kicked out of you to save the world?"
"Always."

That was awesome. And Kara is smart in this issue too. She comes up with a plan, and it works. And she refuses to be psyched out by the Insect Queen, even when she plays on Kara's most sensitive issues, trying to make her believe Lana only cared for her due to her evil machinations.  But Kara is hardcore in her loyalty, and she's badass to boot. "I'm Kara Zor-el of Kandor, Queen. I'm a superhero.I don't scare easily." Also:

"I'll make your life hell!"
"No thanks. My mother does that enough."

Supergirl saves Lana, but the issue ends on a sad note, because Kara feels she can't trust Lana because Lana kept such a secret from her. Lana has a good retort, but Kara flies away, traumatized from watching Lana "die" and not wanting to watch Lana get in trouble again because she refuses to bother her with her problems. Sad! And obviously a way to get Supergirl in the proper Pro-Krypton position for the War of the Superman deal. But whatever.

There's also stuff with Superwoman coming back, but that really wasn't that interesting. I'm glad Lucy's not dead and Supergirl has a good villian, but seeing General Lane be such a cardboard villian and evil father figure is really getting old.

The Cliff Chiang and Helen Slater back up was absolutely beautiful thanks to Mr. Chang's AMAZING art. And it was a nice little storywith warm fuzzy sentiments about how Supergirl is a hero. And nice way to end the 50th isssue!

Igle's art was nice as always, though in the "Supergirl is glowy and angry" panel her very breasts seemed to swell with fury (and randomly start at her shoulders!) The rest of the anatomy was fine though, and fantastic expressions and motion as always.

4.5/5 A very solid 50th issue!

Power Girl #9

Man,this title gives me such mixed feelings. On one hand, the whole sequence with the little kid and naked hallwayness makes Peej look way incompetent and is more than a little gratuitous. On the other hand, Peej gets catbutt in her face, which is hilarious, as is using a loaf of bread for boob coverage for some reason (I'm not sure why. Loaves of bread are inherently funny for some reason)

And she fights an animal army! Then Satanna uses the boob window to attack her (She puts a giant glowing disk exactly where the window is- and it's exactly the size of the window- and I guess it's supposed to crush her into a box or something. Peej, I know you never will, but in real life, this would be a cue to change the costume and close the window) Then Terra shows up ready to kick some ass. And there's banter.

I dunno, there are bad parts of the title and good parts. I probably won't stop getting it, since I feel I have to buy something besides Supergirl when I go to the shop on the third week of the month.

3.5/5

The Unwritten #10

Continues to be awesome. I guess Lizzie is a fictional character bought to life. Tom clearly is too. Savoy...is a journalist. But anyway, the stories totally cool, with the ghost of Nazi Germany and using Jud Suss as an example of how stories can be perverted in retelling and adaption into propaganda to affect the masses (and which I didn't know about before- this book is so educational!)-ie, another cool way of exploring the power of stories. And there's a hell of a cliffhanger.

Poor Savoy is totally the Ron Weasley of the group in everyway- not just the hair and obvious parallels, but he ttries to tell our intrepid hero "Hey, hey, maybe we should not do this thing" only to have intrepid hero do it anway. It's hard being a sidekick.

5/5

S'all for tonight. Looking forward to kicking back for the weekend- tho I have work tomorrow. But it's with Laura and the baby, and I always enjoy hanging out with them.e
