Goddammit, I hate hormones

You know you've got it bad when you practically spend all day crying, from things like nerves about going to college, to your mom being hovering and nitpicky about your socks of all things, to how you hate driving and are never going to get a license, to a production of fucking Taming of the Shrew.

Yes, I almost started sobbing at the end, when Kate ( Read more... )

feminism, damn dirty hormones, sadness

Shakespeare was really kind of a messed-up guy. *glares at Merchant of Venice pointedly*

My main reaction to reading Taming of the Shrew as a teenager was "Well, that was a stupid fucking play". Not exactly profound, but hey. ;)

Eugh, that play. Crying over it is totally understandable, imho, but I cry at anything. It is hard to like Shakespeare when he did things like Shrew or Merchant of Venice. Or Two Gentlemen of Verona, which is a comedy full of rape jokes.

Yeah, he was definitely a product of his times. I was laughing through the first half of the play, because our local actors did just a good job at making it as over the top as possible (whenever Bianca's name was mentioned birds would chirp). But the ending, I definitely shouldn't have sat through that speech when I was feeling weepy.

Yeah, and that's basically the play. See, Kate is really sarcastic and vindictive, but she has a younger sister called Bianca everyone wants to fuck. Thing is, the dad won't let anyone marry Bianca until Kate is wed, and no one wants to deal with a woman who might actually *gasp* ARGUE with them. But the family is super rich, so they find this guy who's totally willing to marry Kate for her money, and claims he will be able to get Kate to be submissive and obedient ( ... )

That is rather repugnant and a totally understanable givent he circumstances.

The Renaissance and afterwards was a poor time for women. Infact, it was overall poor right up until the 20th century. Part of it was due to a post-Black Death Backlash against their rise in social overall function (Remember kids, Joan of Arc wasn't burned as a Witch, she was burned for wearing pants).

Terry Jones Medieval Lives (available for free on youtube or I-Tunes Download) goes on in wonderful detail about the rise and fall of the medeival maiden. Interesting, but far less depressing (though still kind of a downer). I mention it largely because ya sound like you need cheering up, and having Victorian Preconceptions about medeival times stomped flat in a comedic manner by a Monty Python alumus is one way.
