The idea of these people growing up with the knowledge that their lifespan is only 24 years before they have to kill themselves - that's terrible and incredibly sad. If you look at it another way, it also means that most of the younger ones are orphans, because their parents already killed themselves, probably only a few years after having children :( (and also, more realistically - the inbreeding amongst this small group of people! o.O

Some fatalistically inclined people would probably say - like Worf, for example - that it is a privilege to know the date of ones death °-°" You're right though, I had not viewed it from that angle, counting the days, knowing you have to kill yourself - I couldn't even prick myself with a needle - and watching your parents, older siblings go before you. How horrifying! But then, if you were raised that way, indoctrinated through your religion and know that there is no escape because the others will see to it that you are sacrificed, one way or the other... *shudders
