001 [Video/Audio]

[ The video feed is blurry, as though the transmitting device has been shoved into a pocket, and a muffled, irritated voice can be heard calling out for help. ]

Your pocket is talking to you some more, Tulio.

"Did you just arrive here?"

This pocket-box really needs to get a grip on who it wants to be. Young and attractive women, Miguel, and now a middle-aged fellow in more odd clothing.

"Sí. Hardly ten minutes ago - I was just in a jungle, and now I'm here."

He sounds frustrated.

"Do you mind telling me the year, and the location? For context?"

"Barcelona, Spain. Anno domini...uhm..." He thinks for a second. "...1519. Could you explain what's going on, here?"

He gives a low whistle. That's a pretty big gap.

"I'll try. My name's Mark, I'm from, uh. America. 1969."

Because New York state certainly isn't within Tulio's frame of reference.

"What've you heard so far? I'll fill in the gaps."

"Another from America?" He looks exasperated. "Hardly anyone has populated the New World, yet. My partner and I came over on a ship with Cortes."

Huffing a sigh, Tulio tries to take everything in with heaping mounds of salt, as per usual, but it all seems too real.

"Assuming that every resident isn't certifiably insane and stuck in this asylum of a villa, all laboring under the same delusion, then I all I've heard is that this is 'Wonderland'-" He fingerquotes. "Despite the lack of wonder - and gold - and everyone is from the future."

"Oh, and my name is Tulio."

"Not everyone. There's a married couple here from the 1400's."

He quietly neglects to mention that they are also personified countries. One thing at a time.

"And not everyone's from the same timeline, or even the same planet. But for one reason or another, we've all been abducted. Not at random, either. There are patterns--groups of related people show up together, or one after another."

"...planet?"

He raises an eyebrow. "Okay, wait. Wha- Who...doesn't matter. Never mind." Tulio waves his hands in front of himself for a moment, as if erasing what he was about to say.

"Planets as in...as in the ones you can see with a telescope under the right conditions? Mercury?"

"Yep. But don't worry too much about it. It's just. Not everyone will have your frame of reference, and that's why."

"...right. Right, okay, thanks." He scratches his head, frowning a little. This is all way above his paygrade.

"So where you're from...in America...what it is you do, pray tell? For a living."

[paper_knight]

"I..."

Touchy subject, Tulio--Mark's employment record is laughably bad. But Mark won't hold it against you.

"I was a journalist--researched things and wrote them down."

"That sounds..."

Boring.

"...Fascinating."

[paper_knight]

Mark has some pretty finely-honed skepticism senses.

"No need to spare my feelings. It's not my job anymore."

[neverhadenough]

"What do you do around here, then?"

He's actually curious, though.

[paper_knight]

"I've been trying to figure out how this place works, among other things. It's not all that different."

Except for the part where he is literally incapable of searching for Cindy. That's been a pretty big adjustment.
