I just bought Mulholland Dr on DVD. I've seen it once before and I just started watching it again the other night. Does anyone know what the hell is going on in that movie? I saw that movie a long time ago. It was the most messed up movie ever. The cinematography and acting were so superb that they drew me into it mesmerized, but then afterwards, I just saw there going...whoa...what the fuck just happened. One of my friends explained to me the whole dream thing, and it kinda made sense, but I can't really give you any useful opinions on what actually happened. I would really like to see it again, though, and try to form some of my own.

This is so strange, but right after I read you comment last night, I flipped to Bravo and Naomi Watts was on Inside the Actors Studio. She said Betty, the ingenue character she plays at the beginning of the film, is not real, and that Diane is the real person. Betty is fictitious, a created "alter-ego." I'm going to watch it again with that in mind. Annoyingly, though, Lynch doesn't allow DVDs of his films to have chapters, so you pretty much have to watch the whole thing through. The trivia for Mulholland Dr. on the IMDB has some suggestions for understanding the plot. Even Lynch's Website doesn't discuss what the movie is really about. Naomi Watts said she came to the conclusion that Betty isn't real during filming, but she claims that David would never admit that fact. I think Lynch is the anti-Spielberg.
