Alma heard the words her father spoke to her. Not that they surprised her. She had known that asking about those shirts will open a can of worms. But she was so sick of seeing him miserable and drunk.

From experience she knew in some hours he will be drunk enough to pass out. So she had to come back in time, when he was drunk enough; but before he would finally drop like dead wherever he happened to be. Bed, recliner, even on the floor she had found him some times.

She said good-bye to her daddy, knowing she'll be back later.

That night Ennis derived comfort in another person's embrace for the first time.
