I've been wondering lately. For those who aren't from Earth, what sort of religions do you have on your world? I know that's a big question, but.

Maybe a simpler question. Do you believe in an afterlife? Do you think that god--or the gods--distinguish between virtuous and evil people?

Oh. Hawkeye, is it all right if I come by for lessons

Yeah, no problem. I'm down at the clinic right now.

Not hands-on training, is it?

Nothing like a little hands-on experience after all.

I'm just kidding, I wouldn't put you in front of a patient until you're ready. But we got the needed supplies down here and if we do get a patient I can show you on a real live model.

I've had experience, just not by the traditional method.

But that won't do me a whit of good until I get this chip out. So I need to make sure I can help in other ways.

Oh, you magic users. If it weren't for these chips I'd be put out of business.

Still, it must come in handy. No worries about sterile instruments or time constraints, just instant healing. If we had more of you guys back in Korea maybe more kids would have been able to go home in one piece. But then again they'd never run out of soldiers...

You must be from a different Earth, then? I wonder if Shanghai was ravaged in 1913.

There are some constraints, though I'd agree that doctors have a much more trying experience.

A war in Korea--is the Japanese army involved? Where are you from?

Must be, the only magic we have here is guys in tuxedos pulling rabbits out of their hats.

1913? I have to admit that I didn't pay much attention in history class, but it doesn't ring a bell.

Only briefly. It was mainly an armed conflict between North and South Korea, but of course it didn't stay that way. The Chinese and the United Nations got involved and with them soldiers from all over the world.

I'm from the United States. Maine to be specific, Crabapple Cove if you want to get down to details.

History class...it'd be odd if I ended up in a textbook. I mentioned it because a man tried to summon a fallen god last year. It was eventually contained, but it caused a large earthquake through Shanghai, which led to a fire. Most of the city was damaged, if not entirely wrecked, and the loss of life .

[...] Most of that damage couldn't be fixed.

I see. Where I'm from, the Japanese army was eager to expand their territory in Asia. But I didn't expect the States to be involved in that kind of fight. I suppose it may have grown stronger as a country.

I guess you never really know how your actions will change the world. After all, what we accomplish today will be a part of history tomorrow.

Last year? So you're from 1914?

Japan was dealt a hard blow in World War 2. After that they didn't have the resources to expand their territory even if they wanted to. The States however... we were on the winning side. You could even call it one of the major world powers these days.

I suppose so.

Yes, 1914. It was late summer back home.

World War 2? But [...]

Two world-wide wars? I hope that won't happen back home.

I'm from 1953 myself.

...the 20th century has been very bloody so far and it doesn't look like it will get any better soon. You're lucky if your world takes a different path.

We'll be lucky if our world lasts another week, I suppose.
