Yuletide reveals!

Jan 01, 2012 13:25

Let me talk about my Carnivale giftfic again, first: From the Dirt by arllama was really great, and I love it and the author forever because I got a story for meeee. (I'm like this during every story exchange, but especially Yuletide. A story for meeeee.)

And Reveals! I wrote eleven fics again, just like last year - it may possibly become a tradition, though it's probably best that I don't try to commit to it. I was much more delayed on my main fic this time, and then I ended up writing a second fic for my assigned person and a bunch of random treats on the 20th, which was better than last year (when I wrote treats on the 24th). Basically my only resolution last year was to start writing treats earlier, so that worked out, haha.

Short headers and some commentary:

Personal Narrative for sophia_sol
19th Century CE RPF, Richard Burton and co.
3,400ish words, basically gen.

Chai! or, the Unhappy Cafe for sophia_sol
19th Century CE RPF, Richard Burton and co.
5,500ish words, basically gen.

These were for my assigned recipient! I was actually thrilled to get assigned to sophia_sol, because I've been following her posts on Richard Burton and was already kind of a fan of Burton before that. I got a bit stuck when it came to writing, though, because the story I always wanted to write about Burton is the one where I grab the reader by the lapels and say "look. Look at this guy. I'm not making any of this shit up, come on, this is ridiculous." But I also wanted to write a barista!AU, because Sophia had prompted it in her very open-ended letter (also because I've worked as a barista, and find that environment super easy to write). So I started them both!

Personal Narrative was way easier to write - I finished it a few days before the deadline, and livii was super awesome and betaed it for me, so I was done! And Chai! didn't seem to be going anywhere. But then I was studying for a final that I really didn't want to deal with, and I ended up spending all of the 20th alternating between studying and finishing Chai!, and the lj-less Elijah betaed it for me when I got home. I'm really glad I wrote them both, because they kind of complement each other - Personal Narrative is factual and fairly sympathetic to Burton, while Chai! is a bit crackier and more critical. (I also have a lot to say about Burton, so I've written up an annotation about facts and sources for the fics, and will be posting that soon. ETA: it's here.)

Treat fics:

Mysterious Individuals for evilhippo
@MayorEmanuel/The Thick of It, Rahm Emanuel and Malcolm Tucker.
500ish words, teen (for swearing).

I was obsessed with @MayorEmanuel when he was tweeting. And @MTuckerNo10 was similarly amazing. They just had to meet! I'm not sure I did it justice, but I had fun with the idea.

The Mystery of Dinosaurs for illittorate
Dinosaur Comics, T-Rex and Utahraptor.
300ish words, gen.

Second year writing Dinosaur Comics fic! I love these guys, that is all. Also, I have retained my hard won ability to spell Dromiceiomimus without resorting to google, so that's good.

Clearing the Slate for zombieboyband
Drive (2011), Standard and Benicio.
400ish words, gen.

Practically flawless movie is practically flawless. I just. This movie. And I was a huge fan of Standard - his character and motivations felt very real and understandable, as opposed to the Driver's more ethereal character. I really wish I could have written OT3 fic with Standard and the Driver and Irene, but this introspection piece showed up instead.

Amalgamation for agapi42
Gallifrey, Andred and Torvald (sort of).
450ish words, gen.

I've already written Gallifrey and I plan to keep going, but I hadn't done much with Andred or Torvald. Andred's character arc in Gallifrey has always struck me as especially tragic and well-done, and I wanted to explore it a bit.

Making Your Way for crumblingwalls
Making Fiends, Onion Guy and co.
400ish words, gen.

Making Fiends! It is the best cartoon. I discovered it at the beginning of this semester and have been slowly watching it and flailing over how good it is ever since. Everyone should watch it, and together we can create a fandom, pls pls pls.

Making Captain for Doire
Discworld, Angua/Carrot and co.
400ish words, g-rated.

I've always liked the Angua/Carrot relationship. I haven't gotten to read the new Discworld book yet, but I heard that Angua's a captain in it, so I wanted to write this missing scene. This seems to have gone over pretty well, which is good because I had no idea what I was doing, writing Discworld fic.

Clubs High for mjules
Lackadaisy, Zib and Dom Drago.
400ish words, gen.

Second year writing Lackadaisy fic! I really like both Dom and Zib as characters, and it was really fun to write more of their interaction.

Crepes and Chevre for Lorelei
Nero Wolfe mysteries, Fitz, Archie, Wolfe and Cramer.
1,100ish words, gen.

This got a bit out of hand, haha - it spilled over 1k, so it went in the main collection. But I love Fitz and I love the recipes that Rex Stout would work into his novels, so this was just really easy to write. I describe a recipe for crepes in here that I actually use a lot, because it's super delicious and easy. It's also stolen from a street vendor in London who made AMAZING crepes, and I started making crepes for the first time when I was in Germany, trying to imitate his recipe. I use regular flour, but he used buckwheat (and really evangelized the buckwheat), so it's buckwheat crepes in the fic.

Recovery Time for metaphoracle
My Drunk Kitchen, Hannah Hart and Cheese.
300ish words, gen.

My Drunk Kitchen took over my house and my housemates at school for the entire semester. Hannah Hart is a genius, who I can only attempt to approximate.

In summary, Yuletide was a blast and now I have to go respond to comments. And start stockpiling obscure fandoms for next year.
