history:

Roxanne’s life seems to be compromised of two absolute certainties - she is going to get kidnapped by Megamind and she is going to be rescued by Metro Man. That’s how the story always goes, isn’t it? The girl is kidnapped by the evil mastermind and the handsome, heroic superhero boyfriend swoops in to save the day.

Except Roxanne is hardly a damsel, and Metro Man is hardly her boyfriend.

But we’re really getting off subject here, aren’t we?

This story starts off as so many others do - abducted after delivering her news report, Roxanne is whisked to Megamind’s lair where she is promptly tied to a chair and is used as bait (again) to lure Metro Man into the city’s observatory where Megamind intends to kill him with a death ray comprised of the power of the sun. Fairly standard, really. No one really expects Megamind to succeed, because he never does. Good always conquers and all that jazz.

Except this time it doesn’t. Megamind’s plan seems flawed enough for Metro Man to escape as per routine, but the super proclaims that the inside of the observatory is lined with copper, which he says drains his power. A giant explosion from the Death Ray distracts Roxanne and Megamind, and when the skeleton of Metro Man lands at the feet of Roxanne and Megamind they’re both shocked (along with the rest of the city) that Megamind had actually managed to do it.

Initially, Megamind is happy that he has defeated his archenemy for the first time ever, but he quickly grows depressed over the fact that without someone worthy to fight, his life as a supervillain has no purpose. Coincidentally, he and Roxanne both visit the Metro Man museum late one evening, both sadly lamenting the lost hero. They are both told to scram by the curator Bernard, but while doing so Megamind is nearly caught by Roxanne. As a last ditch attempt to hide himself from her, he disguises himself as Bernard. Their discussion prompts Megamind to brainstorm and come up with a totally failproof plan: create a new superhero to fight using a serum of Metro Man's DNA.

Because nothing about this can go wrong.

Later, hoping to uncover any evil plans Megamind has for the city, Roxanne breaks into Megamind's lair (dragging ‘Bernard’ along for the ride) and fights with him over his syringe gun containing the serum. During the scuffle, the gun is accidentally fired and injected into Roxanne's somewhat dimwitted cameraman Hal Stewart.

Roxanne steals some of Megaminds things and makes a replica of his ‘desk’ in her apartment while she tries to figure out what his plans are. She begins to see ‘Bernard’ and begins to date him, going to dinner and parks and bikeriding with him. While Megamind is wooing Roxanne as Bernard, he is training Tighten and pretending to be is ‘Space Dad’ in order to create a hero worth fighting against. Oh, and he’s also trying to keep Minion from finding out about Bernard and Roxanne.

…This all gets a little convoluted, to be frank.

While on a break from training, Tighten attempts to use his powers to impress Roxanne, but is quickly rejected by her. He sees her and Barnard having dinner together and grows jealous and angry. Roxanne is somewhat aware of this, but she’s told Hal no for so many years that it doesn’t occur to her that he will be fuled by that rejection and eventually turn against the city instead of fighting for it.

During a dinner with Bernard, Megamind’s disguise is shut off and she realizes that it’s been him all along - lying to her and deceiving her. Obviously hurt and feeling very betrayed, she rejects him and walks home in the rain. The relationship seems at a stand still and the animosity is brought back tenfold, though they do team up to go to Metro Man’s secret hideout in order to hunt down clues on how to bring down Tighten, who has begun to wreck havoc.

To the surprise of the two, at the hideout they find Metro Man very much alive and well and learn that he faked his death (along with his weakness to copper, which explains why it didn’t bother Tighten). Metro Man explains that he faked it in order to retire from being a superhero and live his true passion: music. Megamind and Roxanne try to persuade Metro Man to defeat Tighten, but he refuses. Roxanne wants to take down Tighten themselves, but Megamind instead also refuses and turns himself in.

Not one to be discouraged easily, Roxanne heads into the city herself in order to try and persuade Tighten to stop. Unfortunately, Tighten’s compassion is at absolute zero and instead kidnaps her and uses her as bait to lure Megamind out.

Funny how things come back around like that, isn’t it?

Megamind is broken out of prison by Minion in disguise after a heartfelt apology and goes to save her. After an epic battle in the city, Megamind defeats Tighten by finding the location of the invisible car (after Roxanne’s confession that she did look back that night in the rain) and draining Metro Man's DNA from his body. This strips Tighten stripping him of his powers, and Hal ends up in arrested and thrown in Megamind’s former prison cell. Megamind is embraced by Roxanne and Metro City as its new defender, and the bad guy finally gets the girl.

personality:

Roxanne is a cynical and feisty woman. She is both courageous and brave - When faced with various torture instruments and alligators, she doesn’t even bat an eye. Her insatiable curiosity and insurmountable amount of energy make her a force to be reckoned with. She’s a mover and a shaker, fearlessly forging ahead into new territory and dangerous situations. She doesn’t take things lying down; with her City is on the brink of destruction and everyone else fleeing, she takes matters into her own hands by breaking into Megamind's lair and heading directly into the hot zone.

A forthcoming and direct woman, she tends to be brutally honest... and has no problem slipping in an added dose of sarcasm when necessary (which seems to be often when dealing with Megamind). She has no hidden agenda and readily puts the city and its people before her own well being, even knowing she has no superpowers to actually stop the destruction. Roxanne's selflessness really shows itself towards the end of the movie, when she tries to stop Hal - Titan - on her own. It backfires, but even as she’s tied to the top of Metro Tower, she still desperately tries to reason with him. She rushes headlong into many situations without first thinking out the consequences, but it’s only because she has others' best interests at heart.

Exceptionally stubborn and hardheaded, Roxanne is an independent woman - She lives alone, has a job that she worked for, and takes care of herself in general. She’s incredibly career-driven and goal-oriented, and very rarely backs down from something that she firmly believes in. This can sometimes get in the way of her friendships, especially when Roxanne is being particularly hard-headed about something; but her overall compassion overrules the frustrating stubbornness that goes along with knowing Roxanne.

She’s loyal to those she cares about and displays a certain amount of generosity and empathy throughout the film; she does try to see the good in people, even when it isn't there. She can be a little short-tempered and impulsive, but these aren’t necessarily negative traits so much as attributes that help define her as a strong woman that doesn’t like taking no for an answer. She’s a go-getter and has no issue leading the way, leaving an impression on nearly everyone she meets, be it positive or negative.

abilities/powers: She’s a nosy reporter! She’s good at getting under people’s skin and getting into their business, working out secrets and things they’d probably rather not share. Besides that, she has nothing superhuman about her.

first person sample:

[The feed clicks on, and Roxanne shows up, looking particularly tense. She’s definitely not smiling.]

You know, you’d think I’d be pretty used to weird things happening to me - being kidnapped on a weekly basis and having an odd assortment of pointed, sharp objects shoved in your face - and being threatened with the occasional flamethrower, ray gun, and boot wheel - sort of numbs a person to the kind of oddities that might otherwise freak a girl out.

[A pause, and a flicker of…something in her face - not quite fear, but maybe something along the lines of apprehension.]

But waking up in a morgue? [She clears her throat.]

That one’s new, and it’s a little out there, even for Megamind.

Can’t say that I’m impressed, either. [That, however, is par for the course - or at least, it would be, if it wasn’t sort of a lie. She’s impressed, all right - but not in a good way.]

third person sample: [This was a sample for an old RP I was in. I can write a new one if necessary.]

What are you up to, Megamind?

Roxanne sat at her desk, notes splattered out in front of her in a mess of papers, folders, and VHS tapes. Decorated and hand drawn notecards hung suspended from strings in her apartment, dangling remnants of the now destroyed photographs she had taken of the mastermind's lair. The decrepit little CD player she kept adjacent to her current disarray of paper data (along with a cup of cold coffee and a half eaten doughnut)  was still merrily piping out some rendition and overly redone version of Yesterday that was beginning to grate on Roxanne's nerves. Where had that mixed CD come from, anyway? Must have been something to do with an old ex - one of those sappy, lamenting CDs that you listen to with half a pint of ice cream while watching movies on Lifetime. Oh - and don't forget the bottle of Pinot. Yes, it goes perfectly with ice cream.

"Yesterday - all my troubles seemed so far away- Now it looks as though they're here to stay-"

"Covered over three thousand times, once even by Liberace - ugh!" She slaps the power button and the boom box sputters quietly before falling silent. It was bad enough the thing was dying, but hearing a song like that at a time like this when she's so close -  It was incredibly bad form to be listening to a song lamenting about times past.

Nails tapped against the desk in annoyance, but it mostly passes and she goes back to carefully arranging her notes, combining patterns and observations into something far easier for her to reference. It's hard, though - there's so many thoughts swirling in her mind and instead of coming up with ideas and foundations and theories, she finds herself idly doodling in the margins, pen pressing firmly against the page in an unconscious vengeance that the paper doesn't particularly deserve.

Finally, eventually - she drops the pen with a clatter against the desktop and she roughly stands up, shoving the desk chair back and ignoring the screech of protest it made.

"I need some air," she announced to no one in particular. With her proclamation, she dons her jacket and leaves the comfort of the room and heads outside, intent on gathering her thoughts and putting her mind back on track.
