When Scotty informs Spock that Kirk has disappeared, Spock has a split second of shock before he reasserts the control over his emotions.

However, when he learns that Jim has been abducted, he is overcome by rage. The only thought that keeps his powers in check is what he will do to Jim’s kidnappers when he finds them. And he will find them, and he will unleash every destructive power he has on their entire world. Because they must be punished. No one can be allowed to take Jim from him - from him - and live to regret the action.

Fortunately for what little control he has left, they find a dubious trail to another star system and something deep inside - some connection he has to Jim - tells him to follow it.

Each time Dr. McCoy argues with him about the trail, Spock has to grit his teeth; he cannot afford the time to remove McCoy from the equation at present. Also, if Jim is in need of medical care, a doctor will be necessary. Therefore, despite the momentary pleasure Spock would achieve by watching blood pour from the doctor’s shredded throat, he knows that it would be unwise.

Dr. McCoy should be grateful that Spock’s logic is still ruling him, if only just.

When they reach the planet, Spock intends to beam down by himself. He is confident that he can deal with whatever has Kirk captive with no further assistance. However, he is not given the option because some force has taken over the ship. A hungry voice in the corner of his mind comments how useful such a power would be. How easy it would be to take that power, if he could simply get close enough to the source.

The voice is overpowered, though, when he learns that instead of rescuing Jim, Spock must watch his captain battle with the other thralls for his freedom.

It is difficult to witness. Every strike to Jim’s flesh is echoed through Spock to the point that he cannot hold back any longer. He does not overtly use his powers - no, Jim is not ready for that - but a subtle nudge at opportune moments achieve his goal.

Soon, Kirk elicits a surrender from the final female thrall and is granted his freedom.

Spock would be willing to leave the situation at that. He has his captain back, relatively unharmed. He can be convinced to forgive, if that is what Jim wishes.

But then that female touches Jim. Pulls him against her for a kiss. And Spock has no more control; he can feel his powers reaching out to wrap around her throat. Ripping her from Jim’s embrace, and keeping him separate from her until she slumps lifelessly to the ground.

Jim appears stricken, but it is nothing that will trouble him for long. Spock will see to that.

And later, once Jim is safely back aboard the Enterprise and within Spock’s easy reach, Kirk blames the gamesters of Triskelion for the female’s death. He seeks solace in Spock’s arms.

And while Spock offers stoic comfort, he is silently pleased that Jim is one step closer to where Spock wants him to be.
