Title: This is going to sound a little obsessive…
Author: Never
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Disclaimer: Not mine. Not true.
Rating: PG
Warnings: AU. John kinda being romantic…read at your own risk!
Summary: “Jeannie, you will never believe what happened to me today…”
Author’s Notes: My first McShep in AGES, so be gentle. It’s not much, but it’s good to be back! Fic and title totally inspired/stolen from Everclear’s ‘Unemployed Boyfriend’. If I can get my act together, it'll be part of a Five Meetings series - guess we'll see.

With his nose firmly buried in a physics book, Rodney huddles at his usual desk in a secluded corner of the library. He always chooses that desk because it is so far away from every other table that he won’t be bothered by any library patrons who don’t seem to remember that they’re supposed to be silent. But because it’s so quiet in his little corner of the fourth floor, he’s soon completely absorbed in his reading, not noticing anything that’s going on around him.

…And that’s why he jumps a little when a throat is cleared just a few feet away from him.

He’s justifiably shaken when he drops his book on the desk, and, with wide eyes, looks up at the stranger. “What do you think you’re doing?!? You could have given me a heart attack! And that would have been a fatal blow to the future from which humanity may have never recovered!”

The stranger - an attractive, lanky man with unruly dark hair and a sinful slouch - just blinks at him.

Sighing, Rodney gestures impatiently. “Yes, yes? And why did you feel the need to approach me?”

After a deep breath, he finally speaks, “My name is John Sheppard, and this is going to sound a little insane.”

Well, that wasn’t quite what Rodney was expecting, but his only outward sign is the quirking of his eyebrow in question.

“I’m not good at talking about…” the stranger - John - gestures between them, “but I wanted you to know that we’re going to be together one day.”

Okay, more unexpected information. Suddenly wary, Rodney leans away, preparing to use his book as a weapon; it’s thick enough to do considerable damage to this John Sheppard’s skull.

“From the moment I first saw you walk into the library, I couldn’t stop staring at your eyes. And there’s something in the way your mouth automatically frowns, and the way your shoulders slouch, like you’re trying to hide. You try to act like you don’t care what anyone else thinks, but I know differently just from studying you from across the room. Everyone else…they don’t see you the way I do.” John takes a breath, then examines Rodney’s face for a reaction.

“Um. That’s…that’s just…” Rodney’s eyes dart around, only this time it’s not because he’s looking for a weapon.

John must see that as a good thing because he takes a single step forward. “I know I sound like a freak, and, to be honest, I’ve never believed in love at first sight or any of that crap before. But. You could be with me, because I just might be The One for you. I’d treat you like you were perfect, and I’d never let you down. I’ll go with you to physics symposiums,” his hand points towards the physics book that Rodney is now clutching in front of him like a shield. “And I’ll debate the relative merits of string theory with you.”

Rodney still has no idea what to say, which is a new experience for him, but he opens his mouth to speak anyway.

“Wait,” John holds his hand up to stop Rodney. “Just. Think about it. I know that I could make you happy.” He leans forward and takes Rodney’s hand, writing his name and number on the palm. A second later, and he’s walking away, not looking back.

Rodney can hardly believe that the last few minutes actually happened. Stuff like that just doesn’t happen in real life! But. He can’t stop himself from staring after John until he disappears. Then, half expecting to find his hand blank, he looks down at the writing on his palm. The corner of his mouth slowly quirks up into a half-smile as he unintentionally memorizes the number. Thinking of how John had looked when he made his case to Rodney, the half-smile blooms into a full grin.

Okay, so. Maybe stuff like that really does happen.
