An Into to Grey’s Anatomy
Meet Meredith Grey. She's a woman trying to lead a real life while doing a job that makes having a real life impossible.
Meredith is a first year surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital, the toughest surgical residency program west of Harvard. She and fellow first-year interns Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, George O'Malley and Alex Karev were students yesterday. Today they're doctors and, in a world where on the job training can be a matter of life and death, they're all juggling the ups and downs of their own personal lives.
The five interns struggle to form friendships in this most stressful and competitive atmosphere. Meredith's medical ambition is overshadowed by a troubling secret: Her mother, a noted pioneering surgeon, is struggling with a tragic and devastating illness. Cristina is a study in contradiction; highly competitive and driven, she eschews any favors in order to make it on her own. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens is the small-town girl who grew up dirt poor and, in spite of paying for her medical career by modeling, still struggles with her self-esteem. George O'Malley is the warm but insecure boy next door who always manages to do or say the wrong thing at the wrong time. In spite of his attraction to women, he's treated as "just one of the girls." And Alex Karev, the intern the other interns love to have, masks his working class roots with arrogance and ambition.
The interns are guided by an established team of doctors who are determined to shape them into skilled surgeons or break them: Miranda Bailey, a senior resident responsible for training them, is so tough that she's nicknamed "The Nazi." Derek Shepherd is the flirtatious but very capable surgeon who shares a forbidden but undeniable sexual attraction with Meredith. Preston Burke's arrogance is second only to his skill with a scalpel. Overseeing them all is Dr. Richard Webber, Seattle Grace's paternal, but no-nonsense chief of surgery.
Grey's Anatomy focuses on young people struggling to be doctors and doctors struggling to stay human. It's the drama and intensity of medical training mixed with the funny, sexy, painful lives of interns who are about to discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white. Real life only comes in shades of grey.

As Cristina tries to recover, she proves to be a very difficult patient; and a visit from her mother doesn't improve her demeanor any. And Meredith's mother, Dr. Ellis Grey, has the hospital staff running in circles. Jeremiah, a cystic fibrosis patient, could benefit from Dr. Addison Shepherd's medical knowledge, but her involvement in his surgery could delay her highly anticipated departure from Seattle Grace Hospital, leaving Meredith and Derek's relationship hanging in the balance.
Meredith and Dr. Shephard must convince a religious man to allow his daughter to have a life-saving operation. Ellis is reliving her love affair with Richard. Alex and George must perform a surgery in less-than-ideal conditions to save a police officer's life. Finally, a slightly buzzed Meredith waits on Derek's decision.

A person falls five stories and becomes George's patient, much to the patient's dismay. Meredith patients won't stop talking about monogamy. Webber bugs Bailey about making a fellowship decision until he finds out that more is going into her decision than he knows about. It's Thanksgiving at Seattle Grace Hospital but the holiday's festivities are less than in order. Meredith and Derek try to counsel a family after their relative has had a seriously traumatic accident. The woman doesn't respond well to the ideas of medical diagnosis and treatment. Izzie is planning a big get-together but the RSVP isn't going so well. George goes turkey-hunting with his family. All that, and lots of general socializing among the interns.

Meredith last night's stand shows up at the hospital with priapism and they need to call Derek Shepherd for a consult which puts Meredith in a very embarrassing position. Alex and Derek must take care of a patient who has a tumor inducing thirst as a side effect.
On the love side, Alex and Izzie are having some slight sexual problems, while Meredith goes on adding one night stands and Cristina is thrown off course by being "keyed".
Cristina Yang has little sympathy for Constance Ferguson (special guest star Rosanna Arquette), a prison inmate who jeopardizes her health just to get out of solitary confinement. Meanwhile the interns all keep careful watch on the family of premature quintuplets with a variety of serious health challenges, Izzie's anger at Alex reaches boiling point, and Dr. Addison Shepherd decides to teach Izzie a very painful lesson.
The holiday season has started but not everyone is in a festive mood. This is Alex's last day in the hospital unless he passes his boards practical exam the next day, thus everyone helps him to review so that he succeeds. However, Izzie is not happy about the others helping him and Meredith has to remind her of the true spirit of the Christmas holiday. Justin is in need of a new heart. One is available but he does not want it because he does not believe Santa gave it to him as his mother said. Cristina and Burke, both handling Justin's case, have opposing views on the matter due to their different stances on religion. Despite a reconciliation with his wife, Derek isn't in a festive mood. George has a simple case of a woman who has a bleeding ulcer, he realizes that the ulcer is caused by her entourage but fails to keep them away, with the consequence that it perforates.

Izzie agrees to work on a difficult pregnancy case with Addison, while Cristina and Alex are in the pit attending to a young married woman with a real bad case of rash. Meredith happens on an old woman that she needs to entubate and then learns she was DNR.
An explosive case arrives at the O.R. that might endanger all the lives of the people working there, which leads Dr. Burke to declare a "Code Black" for the hospital. Bailey worries where her husband is as she is in labor. Also Izzie and Alex may be creating some heat.
Derek is still operating when he finds out about Meredith's current situation. Meredith is freaking out about her situation. Webber and Bailey are dealing with medical health issues. Overall, Seattle Grace Hospital is still under code black and the situation is getting worse.
Derek and Addison's relationship is rocked to the core when a former friend comes to Seattle Grace. Meanwhile, Meredith learns more about her family through her father.
