Romeo + Juliet. I love this movie a lot, I think the idea (R+J set in today's society) is fantastic and the execution on film was pretty much flawless. Furthermore who wouldn't want to attend the Capulet's costume party...SO SO SO AWESOME. And the fact that they are speaking the beautiful Shakespearean language throughout the entire film makes it very enjoyable. Anyway under the cut...
I was looking around on IMDB and came across the Romeo + Juliet page. YAY YAY YAY. It was a great page and all, until I looked at the rating it was given:
6.8!!! Six point 8. COME ON PEOPLE. Whoever votes on these things, and usually IMDB ratings are fairly on the mark for mainstream films, aren't seeing the bigger picture, or something like that. What I'm seeing from this is that to get an average people must be voting lower than 6.8, probably around the 5 or 6 mark, and this film is worth more than that out of 10.
Okay, we've got script adaptation, costume, art direction, acting, DIRECTION & EDITING in the excellent range. Innovation and execution of vision has to count for something. I don't know, maybe these votes are based upon "enjoyability", but I would give the film an 8/10 because Baz Luhrmann's a champion just like Desmond from LOST. Yeahhhhhh, you know it!
What would you give the movie? I feel like I'm over-reacting because the film is in the "6-7" range, it's closer to 7 anyway. Actually, what am I complaining about. I think it is something deeper, okay, I've got it. PEOPLE WHO DON'T ENJOY FILMS FOR THEIR ARTISTIC SIDE. First and foremost, films are an artwork, and if a director (I'm not saying Romeo + Juliet) wants to pay more attention to the artistic aspects of a film then the story that's fine as long as it is executed well. And the films that do BOTH are the ones which are highly highly acclaimed.
Furthermore, anyone seen the new
Elizabeth trailer? It's brilliant, Cate Blanchett's perform is amazing, the part where she is yelling saying "I too have a hurricane in me that will strip Spain bare," goshhhhhh, she's scarily too good at that role.
That's about all I want to say. Sorry for the incoherence and inarticulate nature of this entry.
