Should I do something extremely unconventional and write a review for the Lost finale and Pirates of the Caribbean: AWE (a definite improvement on the acronym TCOTBP) in the same entry? Ummm, no. Except I shall say FLASHFORWARDS (am I the only person out there who didn’t figure it out until the last scene?) and Penny & Desmond all the way!!! That

Girly chat, YAY! I'm glad somebody else loved it too, all my friends were thinking "yeah, as good as the other two", which it was, but the other two were AMAZING, not "average". THINK PEOPLE!
Whoaaaa, you're so clever. I only picked up the necklace thing in At World's End, when it was really obvious with all those close ups. :P HAHAHA, the "GREAT!" part was fantastic, it made me laugh so hard, yeah he did sound like a little 12 year old.
I think they made it very clear that Will will be the captain of the Flying Dutchman for eternity, or until someone kills him and takes his place. YEAH, that's how I want it to be! None of this, after ten years if Elizabeth's been fateful the curse is broken, that's BORING. It's sort of like, what's the point for even Will doing it for 10 years, as they'll just be together in the end. ETERNITY works for me, and it must have worked for Gore too, otherwise he wouldn't have made the eternity think so obvious. It all reminds me of Padme and Anakin in some way with their sad sad sad ending. :(
But go Jack. That was the most fitting ending for him!

I know! That's why I'm trying to figure out where this whole "after 10 years the curse will be lifted" idea came from. Sure, it's sweet and I wouldn't mind it, but it goes against the whole Davey Jones legend. The Dutchman has to have a captain, so if it's not Will, who would it be? Plus, there can only be a new captain if the old one is killed. So, no, it just doesn't work.

Oh! I didn't think of that, but you're right. So sad! :(

""Will is cursed to do the job of ferrying souls for 10 years. When He returns to land on his one day every ten years, if he finds his tru love, the curse is broken and he can leave the Dutchman and lead a normal human life on land. Since Elizabeth will be waiting on him when he returns, the curse will be broken. Jones remained cursed because when he came back ten years later, his love wasn't waiting for him and he couldn't be free from the curse. He became so hurt and angry that he cut out his heart and abandoned the soul ferrying job (which is the reason he came to look like a monster)."
Apparently all the scenes that clarify this were cut from the movie for time reasons. Bad choice, imho.

Yeah, I've been reading up on the issue, and apparently that has been the answer, that the scenes that explain everything were left on the cutting room floor. That sucks, I hope they put them on the DVD.

So the Flying Dutchman is needed to ferry the dead who died at sea to their final resting place. Who is going to do it if it isn't Will? And secondly, if it was such an important part of the film that Will & Elizabeth would live happily ever after, why were those scenes cut from the movie? (I understand time constraints and all that, but this seems something particularly important to leave in unless it wasn't meant to be left in). WE NEED THE AUDIO COMMENTARY NOWWWWWWW!
You don't need to answer these, hahaha. Just thought I'd write them somewhere. :)

Okay, so like I said, I've been trying to figure this whole thing out, and here's what I've come up with. I'm pretty sure that this is what the writers had in mind, but I could be off. When Davey Jones was first given the job by Calypso, he was only supposed to work it for 10 years. After the ten years the job would be passed to someone else (who, I don't know), and he would be free to be with his beloved. But when Calypso wasn't waiting for him when he returned, he cut out his own heart and decided to quit ferrying souls to the other side. Because of his failure to do his job, he was cursed to sail the seas for eternity and eventually turned part fish.
So, if what we are supposed to believe is true, if Elizabeth is faithful to Will while he is gone for ten years, when he comes back the curse will be broken. The thing that they failed to mentionn, is who will take over for Will? And will the next guy have to cut his heart out? That's the message that the writers failed to get across to the audience. Because, when I saw the scene after the credits, I assumed that it was Will coming back to visit for his one day out of the next ten years, and I think that's what a lot of other people thought as well.
As sad as it is for me to say this, it's a Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski film, and it seems that they tend to chose action over plot a lot of the time. Those scenes were most likely cut due to time constraints, but if they had just filed down some of the action sequences a bit, they probably would have had room to fit them in.
I know, we need the deleted scenes and audio commentary post haste! Quickly!
Okay...I seem to have written you a novel, so I'll stop now, lol. Hope that helped! :D

I assumed that it was Will coming back to visit for his one day out of the next ten years, and I think that's what a lot of other people thought as well. ----YES! And which does make me think, did Gore and Jerry want it to be that way? You can ALWAYS change the story in the editing room and maybe they didn't want the writers' ending! I DON'T KNOW. As you and I have both said: AUDIO COMMENTARY POST HASTE!
YAY for novels! They seem to be everywhere lately. :)

For all we know, things could have been changed in the editing room (and they probably were). Weren't the writers even quoted saying that there were a number of scenes cut out that explained this all? See, this is why I want to be a film editor, so that I can make movies better and allow the audience to actually understand what is going on, lol.

"Although the writers have said it was their intention to have Will freed from the Dutchman at the end of his ten-year service, the scene containing the critical conversation was ultimately removed from the film, leaving Will, officially, still as the Captain of the Dutchman and thus obligated to return to sea and his duties."

There was a little part of me that was hoping that the very end clip would have been Jack giving the potion of life to Elizabeth so she could be with Will for eternity.
