Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 “Hello, my dove! You look awful!” Garcia announced as soon as she saw Derek Morgan entering her office. “But I still love you, you know.” She smiled playfully at him.
“Thanks, baby girl.” Morgan managed to say as he sat down and handed her a cup of coffee. “There’s nothing like a loving compliment from a friend in the morning to make you feel like crap.”
“Oh I’m sorry, sweetness.” Garcia suddenly became serious, as if she sensed that Morgan was in no mood for jokes. “Are you alright? Did something happen?”
“Yes, I am fine. And no, nothing happened.” Morgan smiled reassuringly. “Just tired, that’s all.”
And that was actually the truth. Because even if he didn’t get much sleep these last few nights, he felt better than he did in a long time. Three days have passed after he finally got the nerve to contact his mysterious writer and now they’ve been talking online for hours every night. Which of course resulted in him not getting enough sleep. But that was a price he was willing to pay any time.
“Uh-huh.” Garcia winked knowingly. “Late night, huh?”
“Yes, you can say that.” Morgan winked back and took a sip of his coffee.
“So, you finally managed to get in touch with wonder boy’s inner crazy self? It was about time, you know.”
What? Morgan was so struck by that comment that he managed to spill his coffee and choke at the same time. How the hell did she know?
“W-what?” he managed to ask with a voice, that only slightly resembled his regular one.
“Are you okay?” Garcia laughed. “Sorry if I am intruding, but I was curious, you know… My two favorite boys, going out together… I want to know details!!”
“W-what?” Morgan asked again. “Favorite boys?”
“Oh, sweetness, don’t be jealous. You know I love you more than anyone else, but I have to admit, I have a soft spot for Dr.Reid.”
“W-what?” Now Morgan was sounding like a broken record. “What does Reid have to do with me?”
“Weren’t you hanging out with him last night?” Now Garcia was the confused one.
“No. Why would you think that?”
“Oh…” Garcia looked genuinely disappointed. “I just assumed… Both you and Reid look like hell today, and I just thought…”
Morgan hadn’t seen Reid today, so that comment about him looking bad rose some red flags. He decided to share his thoughts. But Garcia beat him to it.
“Have you noticed that he has been looking worse lately? And for Reid it’s certainly tough, cause he usually looks tired. But now… Does this kid sleep at all?
Morgan swallowed hard. Apparently he wasn’t the only one noticing the changes in Reid. But then again, considering what Reid has confessed to him not that long ago, maybe the guy was still having headaches. Determined to find what was going on, but not wanting to let Reid’s trust down, he decided not to let Garcia onto the whole thing.
“Maybe, but maybe he’s just working on his next PhD, you know?” Morgan tried using his lightest voice. “Cause he’s behind on the schedule and he has ONLY three degrees.” Morgan laughed and then continued slightly more serious. “But I’m pretty sure it’s nothing.”
“Okay, if you think so…”Garcia didn’t look very convinced but Morgan didn’t stay long enough to find what she was thinking about. He quickly kissed her goodbye and left, before she could ask any more questions.
Ready to confront Reid about whatever was going on with him, Morgan left Garcia’s office. But because of some long overdue paperwork he had to postpone that particular conversation. It was late in the afternoon when Morgan was finally done with everything he had to do. He silently complemented himself on the efficiency. It has been awhile since he had so much done in only one day.
Yet, when Derek went on a search for Reid, he discovered that the young genius was nowhere to be seen. Perplexed at what was going on, Morgan did the only logical thing. He went to ask Hotch about the whereabouts of their coworker.
“Hey Hotch, you’ve got a minute?” Morgan started cautiously when he knocked on the door.
“Sure Morgan, come in.” Hotch replied with his usual serious voice. “What is it?”
“I wanted to ask you if you knew where Reid was…I wanted to consult him on something and I can’t seem to find him.” Morgan half-lied. “But that was a better explanation that telling their boss that he was worried about Spencer. That’s a trouble Reid didn’t need right now.
Still, Hotch managed to surprise him.
“I told him to go home.” Hotch stated simply, but before Morgan could ask, he clarified. “He looked even more tired than he does usually, so I insisted he goes home. He was done with the paperwork anyways, and since we don’t have a case…”
“Um, okay.” Morgan was a little disappointed. He really wanted to talk to Reid. “I guess I’ll see you later then. Sorry for bothering you…”
“Morgan, wait.” Hotch said before Morgan could leave. “There was something I wanted to talk to you about and it actually concerns Reid.”
“Sure…” Not knowing what that was about, Morgan closed the door and sat in the free chair in front of Hotch’s desk. “What about Reid?”
“I am going to be honest with you, Morgan and ask straight ahead - do you think Reid is involved in something that he is not supposed to be involved in?”
Morgan was dumbstruck by that question. First because it was asked so directly and second, because that was the exact question that he was asking himself not too long ago.
Morgan felt a little relieved, because Hotch asking this question meant that Morgan wasn’t the only one worried about Reid. Yet, that also meant that there were more chances that Reid was indeed involved in some kind of trouble. And given his history… Morgan was worried what that trouble can be like.
“I won’t like to you Hotch, that’s something that crossed my mind too…” Seeing the unsettling look on Aaron’s face, Derek quickly tried to clarify something. “But then again, this is Reid we are talking about… The kid is too smart to make the same mistake twice, you know…”
“I know. But he is also too smart to make this mistake once, yet he did. And we all know where it got him.”Hotch’s words were a little too harsh, but probably it was the right tone, considering the circumstances. “I am just worried that if he falls again, even we won’t be able to catch him, so to speak. And with everything that’s been going on lately, I’m not sure I’ll be able to cover for him…”
Morgan nodded his understanding. The truth was, he did understand the turmoil Hotch was feeling. Because in case Reid was actually doing drugs again, Hotch had to report him. The consequences of not doing so could jeopardize the whole team and could cost Hotch his job.
“I’ll talk to him.” Morgan stated simply.
Hotch nodded in return. No more words were needed. They both understood the seriousness of the situation
Morgan went to his desk to get his jacket, but before he could leave he bumped into Rossi.
“Leaving already, agent Morgan?” Rossi asked smiling.
“Yes I do, agent Rossi.” Derek couldn’t help, but return the smile. “You have a problem with that?”
“No, not at all. I believe it was Benjamin Franklin who said : Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.” Morgan could swear that Rossi winked. “And since I don’t consider myself being a fool, I’ll leave you to your choice.”
“Thank you, I guess…Hotch gave me the afternoon off, I have some personal business to take care of.” Morgan answered, a little confused, but then he remembered something and said. “It was also Franklin who said that good conscience is a continual Christmas.”
Morgan expected a laugh from Rossi, but all he got was a bewildered look followed by even a more bizarre remark.
“You sure have been hanging around Reid for too long lately.”
“Why?” Morgan didn’t get what made Rossi say that.
“Well, he used the exact same quote a few hours ago when I asked him about leaving work early.” With that, Rossi winked again and went to his office
Huh. Morgan stayed puzzled for a few more minutes in front of Rossi’s office. It was a strange coincidence. He learned that quote from his mysterious writer last night, only to find out that Reid has been saying the same line. That was weird. But then again, it was Reid. The guy knew everything.
Remembering where he was headed Morgan decided to leave that mystery for later. Right now he had a genius doctor to talk to.
Back at his apartment, Reid was looking at his reflection in the mirror. No wonder that Hotch insisted on him going home. He did look awful. But that was nothing compared with how he felt.
After that time Morgan almost found out about his secret life, Reid has been careful. And in his case careful meant not doing anything. Ever since he realized that Morgan, the subject of his dreams and the main reason of why he was doing what he was doing, cared about him, Reid decided not to do that stuff anymore.
But the dull pain that he felt in his chest was getting more and more unbearable. He couldn’t take it. He had to go and do something about it.
And despite the late night conversations, he was still sure that Morgan didn’t love him the way he wanted him to. Sure, he cared. But he care about the writer, about the poor little soul that needed saving. If Morgan ever was to find that it was indeed him, he would be disgusted. He would never forgive him, nor would he ever love him.
Reid sighed. It was time. Looking at his reflection one more time, Reid turned off the light and left the apartment. Out for his next hunt.
