Summary: The war didn't start off so well for Draco's family. His remaining (free) family members have hidden him at a Muggle boy's school in America for safe-keeping. For 'Signs' at slashthedrabble.

There was something about the kid. Lex couldn’t define it. He wasn’t particularly attractive - wasn’t yet. Features which later could be described as chiseled and aristocratic just looked pointy on a sixteen-year-old.

And he couldn’t have helped Lex’s reputation if he’d been the prettiest boy in school - he was too strange. Too socially awkward. He carried himself like royalty but the commonest politics eluded him. Old money arrogance and new money ignorance - it wasn’t a popular combination, and his family was an unknown. His parents were in prison. For reasons he wouldn’t talk about. If there’s one thing rich, Midwestern schoolboys don’t care for it’s a mystery that doesn’t come with hallucinogenic side effects or tits.

Then of course… there was his name.

Lex had thought that his dad was a sadist. But what sort of bastard names his kid Draco then tosses him out into the world?

Lex could maybe understand his own fixation if the guy was immediately fun to hang around. But he wasn’t. Getting to know him took work. Getting to know him without smacking him in his pale, pointed face took the goddamned fortitude of a saint. He was stuck up, sarcastic, moody…

Discerning, amusing, hurting - it all depended on how you looked at it.

One thing was certain, he was tough. He never backed down from Queen or any of Queen’s asshole buddies, even when he knew they could beat him down in a heartbeat. Lex knew he hated being here. Hated Excelsior. Hated the way the other kids looked down at him, made fun of him. He was humiliated.

But he held his head high like he knew they’d all bow to him in the end.

One day Queen’s Asshole Buddy #1, reportedly, made some crack about Draco’s parents while no one else was around and Lex wondered if maybe Draco wasn’t onto something. Draco wouldn’t say what he had done to the other boy and Preston just cried whenever somebody asked him.

That’s when Lex figured it out.

“Haven’t you heard. You’re not supposed to get too near to me. I’m a menace,” Draco warned when Lex had made his move. It was the latest word on campus, but Draco didn’t look bothered. Lex couldn’t blame him. Given the choice, Lex would rather be dangerous than vulnerable himself.

“I’ll take my chances,” Lex said. He always did with his lovers. It was the one escape left to him since Dad had threatened him away from recreational drugs and fast cars. Provided he didn’t do anything chancey around a camera.

“Tonks…” Lex began, but Draco stopped him with a scowl.

“If we’re going to do this, you’re going to have to call me-” ‘Not Draco,’ Lex thought. He wasn’t sure he could say the name in the heat of passion without snickering. “-by my real name.”

“Which is?” Lex asked with a raised brow.

“Malfoy,” Draco said.

Lex knew French. ‘Bad Faith,’ his brain translated.

And Lex took it as a good sign.
