Decoupage Virgin

I bought one of those $3.99 wood hinged boxes from Michael's the other day as well as some really cute old fashioned fairy decoupage papers and decoupage glue. I decided to stain the box first because of the colors of my fairies and then glued down the papers where I needed them to be. I think I'm on my 4th coat at this point and this box just ( Read more... )

yes, you will need to use a sealer (primer) because most of the wood products you can get at michael's are made of balsa or pine or other extremely porous woods--and they drink glue right up. sealing the wood will make it less less porous and more strong.

this page suggests "kilz" but i have no personal experience with it. i will ask ben, he tends to have good insights into these matters.

and when you said "Decoupage Virgin" in your subject title, i immediately imagined you decoupaging an image of the virgin of guadelupe to a box.... and it was full of BPAL.

i gotta get out more. ;-)

p.s.--so you know, a proper sealant will only require one or two coats, not the whole bottle. ;-)

Good to know! LOL, you know my thoughts were to make a bpal box, so you weren't too far off the mark. Except, my stomach has been doing way to many flip flops lately for me to brave bpal. I can sniff the bottles and maybe do little testies here and there...but actually *wear* it? Only a couple of times ( ... )

KILZ is icky. I just use acrylic craft paint to prime.

I was thinking about doing that too since I have a whole mess of acrylic paint tubes. I liked the stain color though (oak) but should have used the poly on top. Part of me thinks I should just scrap this one but the fairy pics are cute. So I'll just keep layering...and layering.

It's a fun thing to do though and I'm enjoying it!
