Showered in Blessings

So, it was getting overcast and looking stormy, so I thought I'd better go out for a minute or else I'd be spending my whole day inside.

Near my office is a little run off pond, that is often kind of gross. It collects all the water that comes off of all this pavement. Right now it's really full because of all the rain. It has a lot of high grass/plants/weeds all around it.

As soon as I got to the sidewalk going around the pond I spotted a little frog (this time about the size of the first joint on my thumb). He looked very chubby and happy. He must be having a good summer.

Then I looked down into the pond and saw the most amazing thing. A big, white, snowy egret was wading around in the pond on the far side from me. She was the most beautiful bird ever. I've never seen an egret around here before.

I was so intranced with the egret that it took me a few seconds to realize that close by the egret, a little baby deer fawn was nestled under a tree. He was reddish brown with white spots.

As I walked around the pond crows were flying back and forth overhead to find a safe spot for the storm. On the sidewalk in front of me butterlies, moths, and dragonflies were landing and making themselves pretty flat (I guess they do that when it rains). So I had to step pretty carefully, though most would fly away when I stepped near them, only to land again a couple feet ahead.

When I got to the other side of the pond the egret picked off some leaves from a nearby plant and flew across the pond with them. When I got a little further I found myself looking straight in the face of the mommy deer who was hidden in the tall weeds near the sidewalk. She looked at me for a few seconds and then leisurely walked off with the baby leaping to keep up behind her.

Coming back to the building I saw another gorgeous frog or toad--he was a rusty, reddish brown, and his belly looked almost pale green.

What a nice chain of sightings for an otherwise boring day!
