Well, Kyra was picked up as an adult stray running with a pack of dogs in West Virginia. The rescue called her a whippet and fox hound mix. Now that we've had her a while we are sure she is part hound because she bays rather than barks, and she definitely has some pointer because she points instinctively without ever having been trained to do it. She does have that racing dog shape and people always ask if she's a grey hound, so maybe she is part whippet after all--she's certainly sensitive enough to be a whippet. On the other hand, some hounds also have that narrow waisted shape, and there are a lot of hounds in West Virginia.
Nikita was turned over to the shelter by her previous owners and we were told she was part german shepherd and part yellow lab. But other than her color she has no lab characteristics. She could be pure white german shepherd, since she looks like a small version of one. If she was she'd be one that came out with traits they try to keep out of the breed, like her color and small size and bite problems.
People constantly ask though if the dogs are sisters. Sometimes they even ask "are they twins?" which seems like a silly question. Anyway, lately Sean has been wondering if Nikita might have some whippet in her. She has the timid sensitive whippet personality and the racing dog shape at least.
