Vacation started off inauspiciously enough, mostly with me scrambling to:
A) get out of work in time to: get a new travel bag, fight traffic and get home.
B) get a ride to the airport, and catch my plane.
As for the former, I got out by the skin of my teeth, I absolutely hate the (self imposed) feeling I have of slacking off by leaving "early" even if "early" is closer to ontime and everything is done.
It's one of the rare times I feel like I have to apologize or something, of course I don't, but there's that feeling that i'm getting away with something.
Shoot, with the way this place has been bumming me out, I kind of wish I was!
in any case, I had to pick up a new travel bag, because my black-ish travel bag seems to have disappeared.
Now, i had intended on getting rid of it anyway, and perhaps i did and just forgot about it, but the sad fact of the matter is I packed everything the night before, only to realize I had nothing to pack it in. Lame.
Therefore I stopped at big box destroyer of everything that is good retail whore slut big box store, Target, and bought a new one. It can do the roller thing as well as the handle thing, but is kind of loose (how i like it)
It was on the way back home and it was something that was needed anyway. My only regret is that I had to shop at Target, blech.
Traffic sucked, but luckily Jeanette was kind enough to drop me off at the airport, so after parking the 'Naut, I crammed everything I had prepacked into my bag, and headed out to the airport.
Since this vacation (like every vacation I have ever gone on), was on a budget, I had a connecting flight from Las Vegas, the flight to Vegas was not bad at all... plenty roomy and plenty quick.
It was once I arrived at the Vegas airport did things get lame. In a nutshell, I got moved from US Airways to United, but only found that out as I went to the one far end of the airport and then had to go all the way back to the other far end of the airport. Very lame. Had a way too spicy fast food style burrito as a stopgap towards starvation, can't say I recommend it.
The flight to Chicago ($600 or $700 cheaper than a direct to MKE, and I was renting a car anyway), was completely packed, also for some reason I got the middle seat and not the window seat as requested.
Additionally the guy next to me snored, and my seat wouldn't lean back.
All that was missing was the screaming baby.
So with the time zone changes and everything, I essentially got about 45 minutes "sleep" before being on Central time and at my destination.
fun, fun, fun.
The idea was to hook up with
g33kgrrl and perhaps
nicescarf for a breakfast before I left for the Skonni. However, between the infrequent shuttles and lack of everything being all ready when I arrived it took a lot longer than expected.
Nevertheless! I stopped by K.'s apartment, and met her awesome kitty Puck. We got to hang out for about 15 minutes or so before I drove her to work. She, very thoughtfully, burned me 4 or 5 cd-rs to listen to on the way there, which was rad as I was under the impression I couldn't ipod at all, and hadn't brought any.
(Incidentally K. the rental DID have an aux input, it just wasn't labeled at all and looked like part of the console, Erika later discovered this)
After a pear and a caffeine laden beverage (both good ideas BTW), I was on my sleep deprived way.
Powered my way through rush hour traffic in Chicago, and southern Wisconsin and soon enough I was in MKE and ready for... THE GOOD TIMES!
And yes, those good times were had.
Erika and I did some catching up, and then we were out and about to dinner... and BEYOND!
Here are some pictures of my first day:
Erika with a canon (Amber's) while I take her picture with a Canon
Conan Neutron approves this message.
The stump, it's a drinking game you see? no, well... you will if you
Amber and Erika, we all had some Brats at the Milwaukee Brat house
Amber and Erika drink
Conan Neutron makes an important point.
...one that requires much gesticulation! Ken listens and retorts.
conversations... they were had.
They were really nice here, the food was unhealthy but rad.
Sean came out, who I had not met before, but was rad.
Every time you ordered a beer, you actually got two mugs, it was kind of neat, and also made you feel like you were getting more for your money.
through the beer glass pt. 2 (of which there is not currently existing pt. 1)
Then we headed to the old German Beer House.
Es ist eine Grosse Bier!
the stump. (it's a game you see?)
you have to hit the nail all the way in...
THUSLY! Ken DROPS THE HAMMER!
Neutron did pretty good.
The key is control when it gets further down.
Amber giving it a go, it came down to her and Sean.
the last one to "pound it in" buys the drinks.
That was Sean. he was a good sport about it.
Shot ski, yes it is exactly as it sounds, you do the shots altogether, on a ski.
Vielen Dank!
awww yeah...
Later we met up with DJ at the Riverhorse where Sean (formerly of Hifi) was DJing with Dixie
I was so busy doing "cool" poses, that I forgot to grab my battery charger for the camera... hence no pictures the next day, man, that sleep deprivation does catch up to you. I'm glad Sean grabbed it for me.
no caption needed here!
After the Riverhorse, we ended up at another bar, and then Jamo's (right by E.'s place), we hung out with
sp0rk0, as well as a couple other new friends.
At this point events of the night begin to become unclear, but I had a damn fine time, I know that.
I can't remember a time I slept so hard after that night... 30 or so hours without sleep will do that to you.
ok, more soon...
