yoga and rsi

when my rsi first got REALLY BAD (tm), i remember talking about it with my mom. she recommended yoga for it. she then tried to bend my wrist back because it needed to be stretched. that was very painful and not in that "it's hurtin'-but-it's-helpin'" sorta way. so for me her credibility was completely shot and in any case, doing yoga with a fucked up wrist? the idea was not appealing.

anyway, in the last couple of months, i've finally taken up yoga. since then, my stomach and lower back have balanced out reasonably well and my lower back doesn't feel tired all the time like it used to. this is totally excellent. i've also improved the flexibility in my legs, which seems to be helping with some muscular out-of-wack-ness that was going on there. also excellent, though not 100% fixed.

what's left of my rsi now is the real whopper: shoulders, neck, upper arms. but i'm starting on them now, and i'm completely confident that the issues will be resolved within a couple of months. this is a very pleasant prospect for me.

as a side note, i've been able to look up the relevant postures in this handy-dandy book i got my hands on called "the complete yoga book" by james hewitt. bought it second-hand at a place up in sydney. for those of you who might want to try your hand at learning yoga from a book, this one would be an excellent choice. it includes descriptions of over 400 postures, with 191 clear illustrations (not those fuck-awful things you see in these kinds of books that make matters more confusing). it also has instructions on breathing techniques and a number of the other relevant branches of yoga. also included is a bit of history and cultural context, along with exerpts from classical texts in the section on concentration and meditation.

true story.
