After spending some time in the Perk, Piper decided to head over to the beach. She wasn't in Fandom often, so she wanted to make the best of her time here.
She waved when she spotted Chris, surprised to see him by the rocks.
"Hey," she greeted, walking over to him."
"I'm glad you're still here," Chris said. "There's something weird going on in town. Wyatt and a few others were attacked by something invisible."
Piper frowned. "Any idea what it is?"
"No," Chris said, also frowning. "I looked through the book, but I couldn't find anything that matched. When I busted into Wyatt's room, he looked terrified, but there was nothing there."
That really got Piper's attention. "That's not good. Need any help with research? Since I'm here, maybe there's something I can do."
Especially if something attacked her son.
Barbas was lurking nearby, deciding when he should make his move. Two witches at once? That was almost enough to make up for the rest of the day's failures.
"Do you want to come up to my room and help me look through the book?" Chris asked. "Maybe you'll spot something I missed."
Piper nodded. "Definitely..."
She stopped mid sentence and shivered. "I just got a bad feeling..."
"What's wrong?" Chris asked, immediately on guard.
"I don't know," Piper said. "Something just feels off somehow."
Barbas moved closer, not yet making himself visible to the witches. He quickly waved a hand over both of their faces, in search of fear. The female witch was afraid of drowning and the male was afraid of being unable to rescue her. Why not kill two birds with one stone? The ocean nearby was convenient.
It wasn't until he grabbed her arm that he made himself visible. Now, she would be too frozen in fear to move.
"Piper!" Chris yelled as she went stumbling off the rocks into the ocean.
Piper felt herself sinking to the bottom of the ocean, unable to fight the panic that was consuming her. She stared up at the surface, desperately hoping Chris would dive in after her to save her.
Chris ran to the edge of the ocean, intent on saving Piper, but for some reason, he froze at the edge, unable to move.
"Awww," Barbas said, taunting the boy. "What's the matter? Can't even save your own mother?"
"Who the hell are you?" Chris demanded. "And what have you done to me?"
"I haven't done anything," Barbas replied. "This is all your doing. You're living your worst fear."
Meanwhile, Piper continued to sink. She was too frozen in fear to even try to fight. Breathing was already becoming an issue.
She would die young, just like her mother had.
Chris watched helplessly as Piper sank. She didn't even seem to be fighting. He wanted to turn his head. Or jump in and save her. Something. But he couldn't move, not matter how hard he tried.
"Mom!" he screamed.
Barbas grinned evilly. Finally, he would have his first kills. Of course, he had to continue taunting. "How scared you must be to be unable to save her. But don't worry. She won't be suffering for much longer."
A flash of memory jolted Chris out of his shock. It was something he had
read in the Book of Shadows. "To let go of your fears, trust in the greatest of all powers."
Even though this Piper wasn't the woman who had given birth to him, he loved her as much as he would love the Piper from his own dimension. And he couldn't just stand there and watch her die.
Feeling the power surging through him, he managed to break his fear and TK Barbas out of his way so he could dive into the water.
Barbas flew back and stared in shock for a moment. How could the witch have broken through his fear?
He stood up, angrily stalking toward Chris. "You can't save her!"
He refused to lose out on scaring these two witches to death.
"Wrong," Chris said. "I can, and I will."
He dove into the water and swam to Piper. "Come on, hang in there," he said as he got close to where he was pretty sure she had gone under.
Barbas growled angrily before vanishing. He'd find someone who didn't have friends or loved ones to save them. If he had to leave this island to do it, he would.
Piper thought she was a lost cause. She thought she wouldn't ever see anyone she loves again.
That's when she felt someone grab her hand, pulling her to safety.
"Chris?" she whispered when they made it to the surface.
"Yeah, come on, I'm going to get you out of here," Chris said, swimming to the shore and boosting Piper out of the water before climbing out himself. "Are you okay? Should we get you to the clinic?"
Piper shook her head, shivering from the cold. "I'm okay...thanks to you..."
Chris knelt next to her, carefully wrapping his arms around her. "We need to get you out of these wet clothes. Your friend is staying in town right? Let's get you to her hotel room."
Piper hugged back, grateful. She then gave him a slight nod. "Okay...I don't know what that thing was or how you stopped him, but...thank you."
"You're welcome," Chris said simply. He stood up and helped her to her feet. "I have an idea that I'll find it in the Book. I think I know what I'm looking for. But I want you to stay with Veronica. I don't want him to have another chance at you."
Piper was too tired and shaken to argue. "Just be careful."
"Wyatt and I will be fine," Chris promised. "Let's go."
