Psychiatry and Possession

Aug 23, 2008 14:58

Although this Mind Hacks blog post is from 2005, the article's subject may interest readers here. The post presents a case of possible possession (as described by the psychiatrists) of an individual, involving states of depersonalization, dissociation and hallucinations which were witnessed by others. The individual had been incarcerated for crimes he claimed he neither wanted nor needed to commit. Where exorcisms by clergy representing three different religions, all agreeing the individual was possessed, failed to cure the sufferer, psychiatric medication eliminated the symptoms. The case's original reporters could not explain the reports from other witnesses regarding their shared hallucinations, but they apparently decided that the beliefs and behaviors of the other witnesses did not require medication.
