NEADC's Annual Tropical Fish Hunt

Sep 23, 2007 20:51

Next Sunday (Sept. 30th) the New England Aquarium Dive Club is hosting their annual Tropical Fish Hunt and BBQ at Ft. Whetherhill in Rhode Island. For some reason a number of tropical fish get sucked up from the Carribean (probably as eggs) and end up in the warm summer waters off Rhode Island (70 degrees). The unfortunate thing is that these waters don't stay this warm, which means that these fish will die by late Fall as the temperatures drop.

Thus, every year the NEADC organizes a trip (for both divers and snorklers) to try to catch as many of these fish as possible so they can be donated to local aquariums where they will not only survive, but also reduce the number of fish that need to be taken from the Carribean. So not only do you get to see tropical fish in Florida-like water temperatures, but you get to save them from death, and in doing so help prevent perfectly happy fish in the Carribean from being harvested. Win-win.

I plan to be heading down there next Sunday with offside7, for both diving and snorkling and would love to bring/meet more people there. Anyone else interested?
