I think that people who are strongly implicated in their community have a pathology of their own. They have a strong need for attention, take responsibility for everything, take the blame for everything. They don't like being confronted, yet are very confrontational. Of course I'm talking about me, but I think it describes very well other people I work with in unions and groups of all kind. We need to slack. It's being nocive to our academic / professional lives. Yet, it's so good for the social life and for self-esteem... Which is more important? The question needs not to be asked.
