A few weeks ago, Abby invited several of us to attend a burlesque show at the Visulite Theater, which is conveniently located only about a mile from my apartment. I accepted primarily for the opportunity to do something different. I had mixed feelings going in; I have never seen women strip live, but have seen male revues. I wasn't sure if it would be cheesy, tawdry, or just plain awkward.
Turns out I had a blast, and the show was fantastic. The show was hostessed by Big Mama, a charismatic, large, red-headed lady...a born performer, she could charm a rattlesnake. She was confident and funny, and a perfect diva. Her ladies each performed two strip teases, and I was fascinated by the art form of stripping. If done properly, it is quite engrossing and even elegant. What I found especially refreshing was the fact that these were "real women." Not perfect bodies, breast implants, washboard abs. No, ma'am. In fact, several were overweight...some curvy, one relatively thin and small breasted....but you know what? All were sexy, all were confident, all were comfortable in their skins.
My favorite girl was a lushly curvy redhead...she was the opening act, performing as biblical Eve, miming the tasting of the forbidden apple, and using a sheer green wrap as her prop. She had long, pretty hair that suited her and the slow dance perfectly. I was so impressed by her grace and poise, her command of the audience, that I complimented her later in the evening. She seemed so grateful and pleased by the praise that she gave me a spontaneous hug and engaged me in a few minutes of humble conversation about the art form. She swore that if she had been wearing shoes onstage, she would have tripped and fallen.
All in all, I think it was well worth the price of admission, and would recommend the show to my friends. I adore trying new things, and seeing live theater, so it was a great night.
