Impatient person that I am, I went outside with a flashlight for a quick look. I didn't even bother opening the demarc. The wiring OUTSIDE the demarc, going up, (I'm on the 3rd floor) is clearly cat 1. There are two sets leading out, one's mine and one's ...well probably not mine. One has about six inches of insulation missing and it's spliced together with Scotchloks. Yes, this is *outdoors*. Not in an area sheltered from the elements either.
How much you want to bet that's the wiring that'll trace back to my jacks? DSL over spliced, uninsulated Cat 1? Shoot me. I think new wires are getting run. At least this way I'm aware of it NOW and it can get fixed. That's a whole lot better than being on DSL that's dicey and dropping in bad weather, wondering why it sucks.
