The Fate of Africa: A History of Fifty Years of Independence by
Martin Meredith My review
rating: 2 of 5 stars
Lots of great information; the writing is OK, but the editing is just
terrible. In some perverted effort to maintain a thread, the author
switches topics near the end of each chapter to lead into the next.
The fact that you can read sometimes 10 or more pages without seeing
the name of a country sometimes leads to confusion. With this much
information, the arrangement is of prime importance for good recall,
and the book really fails in this regard.
With regard to the editorial content, Meredith is down-playing the
negative effects of colonialism and pointing mostly at Africa's
native rulers as the cause of much of the harm in the current era;
indeed there are a panoply of evils.
