I should have known better. I had made the mistake of thinking it would be a quiet week. After all, I had come to the end of an eight week marathon of weddings and didn't have any weddings scheduled for this week. I had foolishly told my folks that it was a good time to visit. My plans were to catch up on office paperwork and other than making the cupcakes for the Q Shack there really wasn't much else on the baking schedule. Until...
The call came in on Sunday from the fine folks over at Savory Fare. They wanted to know if I could provide a few dessert items for an upcoming event that they were catering. No weddings this week, sure I can do that.
Then there were the six couples who called in for tastings. No weddings this week, sure I can do that.
And the woman from Virginia that wanted a special birthday cake for her sister who lived locally. No weddings this week, sure I can do that.
And the fine family who were celebrating a birthday at Maggiano's and needed a diabetic friendly 'cake'. No weddings this week, sure I can do that.
Suddenly, my quiet little week wasn't so quiet after all. And you have to love parents who are willing to spend more time with your dogs than you when work is calling.
We started with a Raspberry Truffle Cake for the sister who was turning... well, we will just say in our eyes she'll be 29 forever. The cake was chocolate with a layer of chocolate truffle, with fresh raspberries and a soft chocolate ganache filling. All iced in Soft Chocolate Ganache Buttercream and garnished with fresh raspberries. Yeah, it's a little yummy.
For the tastings there were lots of cakes to choose from - Golden Butter, Cream Cheese Pound Cake, Chocolate, White Almond Vanilla, Lemon, Red Velvet, Carrot and of course my signature Sweet Potato Praline cake.
For the soiree, there were Mini-Cheesecake bites, Mini-Cupcakes, Mini-Scones. For a while there, I was feeling like I'd be doing everything in miniature. There were cookies too -- Shortbread, Peanut Butter Blossoms with Hershey's Kisses, Giant Chocolate Chip Nieman-Marcus Cookies, Brownies - with and without nuts (because sometimes you feel like a nut...), Tri-Color Almond Petit Fours, Lemon Squares. And if that weren't enough, a ton (okay, more like five pounds) of dark rich Truffles. And the crowning glory, Giant Butter Cookies in the shape of Flowers and Dragons (bagged and tagged, of course).
The last thing for the week were two cheesecakes for a birthday celebration at Maggiano's. These were special cheesecakes, as the birthday celebrant was diabetic and needed a dessert that was sugar-free. So for the birthday person, a Splenda cheesecake was made. For the non-diabetic diners, a sour cream cheesecake was made. Both had a sour cream finish and fresh slice strawberries.
This week there are no weddings... but I'm not making the mistake that it will be quiet.
