Soundtrack
So, another mission for 
hat_sorting to earn points, this time a soundtrack. It's focused on me, my life and as you'll see that means my relationship with fandom also. So, here it is...
The Cover Art
Why I Did What I Did
The cover art is used from photos from New Atlantis. The front cover is Sam Carter, from the season eight episode Meridian of Stargate SG-1. She's the scientist of the group, the one who tends to be some what realistic though gives into her curiosity at times. The main reason I chose that picture though, was because she was behind bars, looking outwards, beyond, towards freedom. And, in some ways, another life. Also, that picture is from an alternate reality, where Sam Carter isn't military, and is a bit of a geek/dork. As a friend of mine keeps on reminding me, I'm a dork. It seems apropriate.
The back cover's background is just a random picture that i liked of John Sheppard, from Stargate Atlantis, coloured and faded so it's hard to see. Watermarked, in a sense, but beyond. The mini graphic at the top is made from the same pic layerd on top of itself, and is also of John Sheppard, from the season two episoe Aurora. Again, he's been taken prisoner, but he's in a star ship made from ancient technology, a new and strange place, in a virtual reality. He's looking around, and that shot has always struck me as showing a sense of wonder you don't often get to see in that character.
In any case, those covers combined seem to fit both the title, 'Distant Lights', and side of who I am, the dreamer. The person stuck on Earth, in this time, but often dreams of other places and other times. There's a reason I love Doctor Who, and it's not just the great characters. The subtitle of my personal journal is: 'The Earth Isn't my home...I am a Time Lord, I walk in eternity'. It's a quote from The Fourth Doctor. It says a lot, and the title is related to that, in a sense. It's out there, and it's distant, but it still gives off light.
And, I've no idea if that makes sense to anyone who isn't me. But, I hope it does.

This song is life. From begining to end, from youth to old age. It's want, it's regret, it's wishful thinking. It's a journey, and I think the best place to start an albumb describing a person, a life.

This, to me, speaks of when I was young. It wasn't exactly a brilliant time, there was stuff going on, but I would stare at the sun, the stars, dreaming, wondering. It's probably not the popular interpritation of the song, and almost definately how it was meant to by by U2 but... that's what it says to me. Looking at the sun, almost blinded by it, dreaming of what's out there.

A song of unrest, of protest, of rioting and so on. Written and sung before my time, but still relevent. When I was young my dad and his fellow workers went on strike. It lasted for some time, and he'd go to the picket line every day, there were marches of protest that I joined in on. There was the stuff you usually get at picket lines, and I got on TV!

In this song I see a person captured by a dream, by a vision, by wims that wont let them go, that force them to learn how to fly. To soar above the earth, to the stars, the sky, flying. In a way, this is me in my idealic phase, me when all I worried about was how to escape the local bully and go back to making up stories. Me getting captivated by Stargate SG-1.

Bored of the real world, fed up with it, not fitting in I eventually found fandom. And fell in love with it, that was me, that was my freedom, and I always hated going back to the real world. Still do, actually. The real world still depresses me a great deal, the wars, the killing the prejudices and the hypocracy flying all over the place, it's enough to make a person cry at times.

This is, quite simply, the obsession of fandom. Can be a good thing, can be a bad thing, but it's there. It's in each of us, and especially the fangirls/fanboys. The song isn't a light and happy one, it's dark, and goes to the extreme of obsession, offering a first born or two up for a dream. But, it's obsession, and it fits more than anything else I could think of.

This is... a strange song. And one of my favourates. It's about want, about not quite feeling alive but the pain letting you know you are. You're you, alone, and people don't understand. And, to me, it seems that this person in the song has a person who they think does, understand them that is, a sort of glimmer of hope. I supose this is kinda like me being by myself, no friends for so long, and then meeting the person who'd become my best friend and Twin.
