Character Name: Saphir Wyon Neis (better known as Dist)

Canon: Tales of Symphonia

Age: 35 years-old

Class Title: Dist the Reaper (he'll either hack it or claim it's 'the Rose')

Background: Saphir grew up in Keterburg with Jade, Nephry, and Peony. Even then he was constantly vying for Jade's attention, more often than not spending a good portion of his time with the latter. As a child he possessed a very soft and quiet voice, almost as if he was too shy to speak. This didn't stop him from sticking to Jade like glue, despite how harsh and ruthless the other boy could be. When he and Peony had gone to skate on the ice, Saphir had followed without even knowing how to skate. He ultimately fell and started sliding towards his friend with the blades first, in which Jade promptly used an arte to drop the former in the freezing water. Needless to say, there was quite a commotion that followed.

Rewinding a bit, Peony initially came to Keterburg under the alias Franz. They all studied under Gelda Nebilim, formerly a Locrian General that served the Order of Lorelei (well, Peony was hanging around for the most part). The to-be emperor had a relatively easy time befriending Jade, much to Saphir's chagrin. Their first 'official' encounter was horrifying on the younger boy's part. Jade convinced Saphir he really wanted to meet this newcomer, and ended up pushing him out into the open as a bait for the guards. While the boy was busy frantically screaming for help he visited Peony, leaving most likely Gelda to deal with the mess. Surprisingly, Saphir doesn't ever seem to nurture any negative feelings toward Peony.

His relationship with Nephry is not elaborated on, but one can guess that she babies him to an extent. Saphir was and still is a needy person.

Despite Gelda's discouragements, Jade experimented with the Seventh Fonon - a set of abilities people can only be born with - causing their teacher's house to light on fire. Holding her students' lives as higher priority than her own, she secured the safety of the four children at the expense of hers. Her death sent the childhood friends into a state of grief, though Jade and Saphir seemed to have taken it much harder than Nephry and Peony.

A child genius, Jade planned to use Fomicry to replicate his mentor. In short, he thought up the blueprints while Saphir - unmatched when it came to mechanics - shaped the invention. Unfortunately, having used the First through Sixth Fonons with the absence of the Seventh, the clone they gave life to was a mindless murderer and killed anyone in sight. The replica was sealed away, followed by Jade quitting the research. On the other hand, Saphir foolishly continued to pry into the matter, so desperate for his deceased mentor. Everything and anything he did afterward was for the singular goal of bringing Gelda back.

Saphir eventually joined the God-Generals - the leading commanders of the Lorelei Church's Oracle Knights - as Dist the Reaper (Shinigami Dist in original translations), though his effeminate nature caused him to scoff at the title. As such he constantly introduced himself as 'Dist the Rose' for an elegant touch, claiming to be beautiful and full of grace. Jade believed otherwise and called his childhood acquaintance 'Dist the Runny', as his nose apparently got runny whenever he was upset - which was a common occurrence considering Saphir's immaturity. This was a running gag in the story, since everyone seemed to correct him whenever he used the title he chose for himself.

At some point in the past he met Anise. According to Ion, Saphir was always seen eating by himself during mealtime; Anise felt sorry for him and approached the man on her own accord. She came to admit that he wasn't a really bad or good person, and that his tendency to go on and on about Jade was unnecessary. Since Anise was basically the first to come talk to him, Saphir tampered with Tokunaga to grant her the ability to manipulate the doll's size (it's implied he gave her the doll to begin with). Because of this, Anise was one of the rare people that was capable of seeing more than a snobby fool in him.

At St. Binah he engaged in a conversation between the God-Generals, although he went about spouting nonsense concerning his appearance more than anything else. The younger members, Arietta and Sync, insisted on calling him 'Dist the Reaper' despite his protests, distressing the man as they then decided to ignore him. Excluded from the main conversation while he demanded attention, a messanger came to deliver them news, and they left the entrance of St. Binah shortly afterward. Once Luke was taken to Coral Castle, Dist checked his fonon frequency and all of the former's fonslots were opened. After gathering up the fomicry documents, the genius hastily left leaving Sync to handle the coming trouble.

Tarlow X, Dist's frequently seen little errand robot, attemped to steal the Tone Stone, but was caught by Luke and the others. He reunited with his machine, where he tried to introduce himself when Jade oh-so politely referred to him as 'Dist the Runny'. More gag concerning the man's title came up, leading to a silly argument and Dist actually checking his nose to see if it was runny in the midst of his childish fit. He changed the subject and demanded that Jade hand over the Fon Disc data, swooping down and taking the disc from Jade's hand, who calmy replied that he had already memorized the contents. Realizing that he was being made a fool of, he sent a machine out to fight them and retreated upon defeat.

Much later, he approached the main group and demanded that they surrender Ion, the head figure of the Lorelei Church. They refused, and he again unleashed Kaiser Dist, his main fighting machine, to take the prophet by force. Naturally the machine lost, forcing his inventor to run away. Again.

As it turns out, Dist only joined the God-Generals for the privileges the position offered, not caring in the slightest for the responsibilities. Luke and the others overheard Dist conversing with Mohs, where it was revealed that he intended to help Mohs restart an impending war in exchange for information on Gelda's replica, which the priest had casual access to. Since he could not retrieve the data by himself, he decided to go after Mohs by negotiating.

After some more minor encounters and Asch's betrayal, Dist gained custody of the Flight Stone, which Luke needed. He demanded that they come to the place of the vow (Keterberg). However, he was a terrible liar and said that it was definitely not in Dart, and the others merely brushed off his demand and headed off to the supposedly false place and retrieved the stone. Dist was left to himself at Keterburg, where he passed out from the cold despite the town being his place of origin. Nephry found him in his miserable state and took him to the inn. When Jade came to Keterburg, she asked him to check on Dist. Jade decided to interrogate the man for details on Mt. Roneal. Outside the room, Luke and the others heard the God-General screaming for mercy.

In the end, Ion died and Mohs was named the head priest. Dist technically ended up backstabbing him, as the man's body could not take the amount of Seventh Fonon that was forcibly injected into his body, turning him into a monster. Mohs was useless to Dist at this point, and he easily left the man to inevitably die.

In the Tower of Rem (... where he's actually standing for once. Dist is more or less never seen walking, but riding on his flying chair until up to this point), Dist expressed his desire to bring Gelda back, claiming that Jade would return to his old self once their mentor was back. Followed by a verbal argument, their quarrel ended after a final fight against Kaiser Dist. From the machine's failure and other complications, there was an explosion as Dist caused the place to self-destruct. He was believed to be dead, but he actually survived and, after a silly pursuit and releasing Gelda's replica - who was finally destroyed by Luke and the others, he was thrown into jail. At the end of the story, he's the only former God-General to be alive.

Personality: Dist does not only pine for attention, but needs it for the sake of living. He is extremely needy and childish, trapped so much in the past to the point he hasn't properly mentally aged ever since the incident involving Gelda. Like any average child, he pouts and throws a tantrum when ignored or proven wrong, especially in the situations where Jade is present. Although he has the mentality of a dependent child, he still retains his intelligence and is considered a genius amongst his peers and the people back at Keterburg.

He can be incredibly stubborn and persistent, tenacious by all means when it comes to what he wants. Everything about him actually revolves around Gelda, not so much Jade (if only for his desire to make the man revert to his 'old self' that he had followed around like a lost puppy), and that has made him ridiculously single-minded. His determination of sort is strange and warped to the point it would be difficult for anyone to fully comprehend it. It's easy to understand what he wants, but dealing with it is another story.

However, despite his one-tracked mind he expresses the need for attention, as mentioned earlier. He seems to have a softer side to himself in contrast to the silly exterior he often shows, as noted by his first encounter with Anise. He was kind enough to help her by tinkering with Tokunaga to make her an eligible member of the Order of Loreiei, which subsequently lead to her being entitled Ion's guardian. This was in return for her act of kindness by approaching him when he was lonely, showing that Dist is actually capable of reciprocating generous gestures. Evidently he's lonely - he just won't admit it. He chooses to cover up this vulnerability and accepts the fact that people refuse to socialize with him.

Dist's a genius and he knows it. He regularly flaunts his 'beauty' and intelligence, praising himself and looking down on others, going as far as calling them monkeys. Unfortunately, his insults tend to backfire and come hurling right back at him, making him a horrible offender. He's smart, yet his childish demeanor says otherwise. Mostly people wouldn't think he's incredibly smart at first glance. He's particularly good with machines (whereas Jade is his counterpart and is outstanding when it comes to theories) and hands-on activities. Nevertheless, Dist has an ego, and a very big one at that.

It's difficult to guilt trip him. He's wholly convinced that what he's doing is right and for the better, and this has clouded his judgment for the worse. Dist felt no remorse in leaving Mohs in his deplorable condition, and didn't care in the slightest when Ion died after reading the Score that would take his life after reciting it. All Dist cares about is bringing back his childhood that he lost when Gelda died. That may as well be the only thing he regrets, losing the life he loved and cherished so dearly.

Finally, it should be more than obvious that Dist has many loose screws in his head. He's not the healthiest individual to be around for his stunted mental growth and what could be called semi-insanity caused by obsession. Even after the death of the replica, it's evident that he would still pine for his lost mentor - he really cared for her, and she ended up dying a horrible death.

Immediate Possessions: His flying chair - he's practically permanently glued to it.

Deposited Possessions: Tarlow X, malfunctioned or not.

Sample Entry: (he'll miraculously have his chair with him. Somehow.)

I was taken from my cell, only to be abandoned in this miserable dump. This is clearly unacceptable! I, the beautiful Dist the Rose, should not have to be trapped in a place as disgusting as this. It's too dark and eerie! I demand an explanation -
even the prison had much better standards than this.

... Fine. If no one will answer, I'll have to find a way out myself.

More importantly: is Jade here? Or any of his acquaintances for that matter? I need to have a word with them, if you will.
