i finally got around to start watching gravity falls!
yes, it's a kids' cartoon.
but gosh, it's so much more too! though of course it's supposed to cater to kids, there is some really incredible imagination in this series! the finale of the first season and practically all of the second season so far are some damn friggin' stellar story telling!
the kids are so endearing. dipper with his uncertain but determined spirit, and mabel being such an optimistic cute bright ray of light. dipper with his rational quick wit, and mabel with her unorthodox methods to save the day. i thought i'd be really irritated with mabel's boy-craziness but her indomitable cheery spirit wins me over!
my initial expectations of grunkle stan proved inaccurate. wow, he really came through for the kids - i thought it'd be done in some cheesy, contrived way, but no! he really did some really awesome things for them, in truly wowsome ways. i like how they have preserved his mystery from s1 to s2 as well :) my jaw really dropped in the last ep of s1. and quite honestly, his whole story is really quite sombre and sad T_T
the side characters are so lovable as well. the cute cute pig, waddles - with no real lines, just being generally a pig and adorable *heart melt*. soos with his daftness but always so well-meaning and protective. and wendy is one cool dudette - i think any kid would look up to her! and pacifica - well :)! and man, gideon is just... messed up, man. you're really messed up, kid.
i can't believe there were some great guest voices too. i squee-d when i heard nick offerman as one of the government dudes.
there is so much good stuff in this. and just like tobin's spirit guide, the creator of GF released a journal 3! there was even a real life special edition with actual invisible ink writings that you have to read with a black light - AND DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH ONE NOW COSTS. IT COSTS UP TO A FREAKING $3,200 ON AMAZON. WHAT. there are some resales that cost $300 etc. but that's still incredibly crazy. and even the resales are sold out.
and you know what that means? that means, that these books have been snapped up by people with actual spending power. THAT'S HOW CRAZY GOOD THE SHOW IS. guilermo del toro described it as one of the greatest shows ever. HE IS CORRECT.
the amount of twists in this show! i don't know how many times i dropped my jaw. especially in season 2. i am just 11 eps in, and almost all the episodes are stellar - and that's saying alot considering that season 1 was already awesome. i love the serious episodes especially - they get a lot of plot ground covered, the conspiracies are O_O, and we really get to see a lot of heart from all the characters T_T the character development is incredible, and the continuity of plot is waaaaay beyond even some dramas (i am looking at you, bad korean soaps). the music is WONDERFUL and the animation both adorable and gorgeous. you know how much plot they had to squeeze into these short episodes? they had to squeeze so much (and so well) that they even SHORTENED the opening in some episodes. some of the jokes and references are so delightful for the adult listener (like how pines described mcgucket).
there are a few western cartoons that i love for their sheer epicness. avatar: the last airbender, teen titans - particularly season 4, x-men (the 90s version), and of course, my most beloved the real ghostbusters (NOT slimer! and the RGB which was essentially a very dumbed down version. oh, guys.). i would say adventure time and over the garden wall come very, very close - especially with simon's tale T_T for AT, there were a lot of epic moments and a lovely, dark overarching plot, but i also thought that the innuendo was a bit much for a kids' cartoon, and quite honestly i think i actually cannot remember some of adventure time's bits O_O (maybe cos' it was very hyper - which seems to be the general mood of most western cartoons). nonetheless i probably will fall in love with it all over again if i rewatch it.
avatar i loved for its rich, deep world making and its beautiful coming of age tales. (oh zuko. oh zutara. T_T)
teen titans i loved for kickass action and beautiful, touching gems of friendship moments (and hilarity)! (i can't believe it, but i ship all the ships. especially raven and bb :D)
x-men - ah, the show that taught me compassion for others both same and different, and looking up to one of the most doggedly determined and never-say-die (almost literally, but RIP m'man) heroes, wolvie.
RGB - where even to start? the show that introduced me to the idea of camaraderie and family beyond blood <3 and to psychology HAHAHA (yes, peter is alot more smart and hardworking than he is initially given credit for, he just doesn't want a nerd rep :P!)
and now...
gravity falls has cemented its place right there with all of them T_T. IT'S MINDBLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's the steins;gate of western cartoons! i can see why it's such a fan favourite. i love it!
