Prius oops

Apparently, there are more than a couple reports that the new Toyota Prius has a software glitch that can cause the engine to mysteriously shut down. In traffic. At highway speeds.

I'm not so sure on the sales volume.

Keep in mind that the Civic uses the standard VVTI engine that Honda's had in place for a while now, whilst Toyota haven't had the time to tweak anything on the Prius, because they've been straining to get more models out there.

Australia's one of the few Western countries now that don't offer any tax/purchase breaks for buying a hybrid - heck, your own government has us beaten hands down in that department, though at least we're not Japan - where after 130,000 kms, a car must be sold and taken off the road.

Peronally, given the choice, if money weren't an issue I'd go for the Mercedes Benz smart car. That thing is an absolute gem for someone who lives in an inner city environment like me (Sydney). From fuel consumption to size (when trying to find a parking spot in the CBD), it has a good combo - and decent room, all things considered.

For a standard 4 cylinder car that runs on straight petrol, my personal pick at the moment is the Suzuki Liana. That car oozes appeal in the same way the revamped camry did back in 99, when it first came out - and has more head room than most vans, without looking at all stupid.

Found a GM Panther Black 2004 model, with 27,000 kms for $18,990 AUD (taxes and charges included). Thinking very, very seriously about it.

Yeah. Honda brought it to market slowly and worked the bugs out. Toyota rushed it to market, and whoops, it shuts down on the freeway (though rarely, at least). In my mind, Honda scored better than Toyota on quality control. That's all I'm saying. :)

I'm looking at a new car, too. Well, used, but new to me. Something that can haul bulky camping stuff around to SCA events, though, so no nifty compacts for me.
