Notes: This character is harder to write than I thought it would be. xD;;;
He'd never been strong enough.
Even back when he was wild, he wasn't strong enough to deal with other wild Pokemon; angry red eyes and big black claws flashed through his mind when Paul reminded him how weak he still was.
And it was the truth. He knew Paul was right to call him worthless without Blaze, that ability being the only reason he hadn't died before even meeting the trainer. While memories of the battle that move had ended still terrified him, they also kept him going, no matter how little rest he saw each day or how many scars covered his tiny body.
And finally, on the first day of the Hearthome Tag Battle, there was Ash.
“Man,” Ash said, quickly recovering from his close encounter with a flamethrower, “you just keep getting stronger and stronger!”
Chimchar couldn't recall ever being told something like that before. Sure, it was only Ash, somebody Paul didn't see as having much value, but it was somebody. It was a start.
And maybe, someday, he'd impress his master too.
