title: in the seas or in the quarries
author: Hans
fandom: Panic! At The Disco/Sandman
rating: PG-13?
disclaimer: This never happened, and I don't own any of the Endless. Sigh.
summary: Sometimes fans make ripples long after they're gone.
author's notes: No, I don't know why. Ryan/Desire, Ryan/Spencer. Title from an Ego Likeness song.

It's a big crowd, maybe as big as Spencer's ever seen it, and aside from that he's up in his crow's nest of a drum kit, but someone out there keeps catching his eye. The first time it happens he sees a flash, thinks it's a knife and worries for Ryan and Brendon and Jon, but the second time it happens he sees it's just a grin, chalks it up to weird lighting. He sees the rest of the person's face a second later, and firmly chalks it up to weird lighting, because people don't have yellow eyes, they just don't.

The girl -- the guy -- the girl -- catches his eye a few more times that show, and once he swears she's smirking at him, but mostly whenever he sees her she's looking somewhere off to one side, and when he looks over at Ryan he sees he's completely entranced, fingers moving mostly out of habit.

Ryan stumbles into the room they're sharing at five the next morning smelling a little like peaches, and Spencer can't even spare the energy to be surprised.

The next day, though, Ryan barely looks at him except for when it's absolutely necessary, and when Brendon asks where he was last night -- singsong, "Ryan Ross was getting off, who do you think he was with?" -- Ryan just blushes and looks at the floor and avoids Spencer like it's in his genes, right there next to the half-rests and eighth notes nestled in between his nucleotides.

Later, sometimes he'll catch Ryan almost staring at him from the other side of the room, and Spencer wonders what Ryan sees, if maybe the secrets to life are written on his skin somewhere, scrawled in handwriting that Spencer can't see as anything but Ryan's.

When they start working on the new album, Ryan writes a song that's, he says, about a lot of things, about nothing and everything, but Spencer squints at the spaces between the words, sees yellow eyes and smells summer peaches, and then when he squints a little harder he sees blue eyes and long summer afternoons on Spencer's porch, feels an ache he can't really identify, and when he looks back up Ryan's finally meeting his eyes, and Spencer doesn't know what to do.
