Okay, I'm one day too late with my answer but it's a difficult question somehow!
"Why do you love them" suggests that I could name more than one character - that's pretty good because I'd always had a problems with making decisions ... *gg*
I think my favorite character might be Lestat de Lioncourt from Anne Rice's "The Vampire chronicles". You know, I got a thing for rebellious, romantic, tragic characters - and to find it combined in one is alsways rather addicting to me ...
I'd also felt very much attached to Ash Pelham-Martyn from M. M. Kaye's "The far pavillions". Although I can't remember exactly why anymore - reminds me I need to read it again!! :-)
And then of course there's Scarlett O'Hara from Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the wind" which I deeply admire because she's so independent and strong. I don't like her behaviour most of the time, but nevertheless she's the one female character in a book which I love despite all her faults.
And Vivien Leigh was so fitting a choice, she has always embodied Scarlett for me ...
... and as we're talking about GWTW - I don't know if I'd already told you but if anyone could find me a guy like Clark Gable, I'll be forever grateful! *ggg*
